Scandal!

It was so tempting to name this post "Davao Scandal."  That way it can potentially lure traffic for people seeking sex videos or naked photographs.  They say it's one of the most profitable ways to earn money online.  But then again, I really don't want to do it that way.  And it would probably be best to keep those types of readers away from this personal blog.

While this post won't be about a sex scandal in Davao.  I would still definitely consider it a scandal that happened in December 2011, right here in Davao.

Cheer Up! Somebody is looking after you.

THE LIVING DEAD

When we talk about the living dead we usually refer to zombies or people who have died but have somehow managed to rise from the dead and roam among the living.  While they are literally dead they roam with a specific goal in mind, mostly to search for fresh human flesh to consume, as depicted in most fictional stories.  My question now is, what do you call the living who are more dead than the dead.  Does that make sense to you?  They are those who are stuck in a routine, they eat the same food, they don't want to try anything new, they are apprehensive to leave the comforts of their home, they lack goals, and probably most revealing of all is the fact that they're afraid to die and try to do everything in their powers to stay alive despite living a life that most would consider dead.  Have you encountered people like this in your life?

Image Model for Coron, Philippines

In an unexpected twist of fate, Sun Jun became an image model for the city of Coron!  A friend said that she saw my picture in this site more than a year ago!  It made me wonder how long the site had been using my picture to promote Coron in their webpage - without my permission that is!  They obviously just grabbed my picture from my Coron Philippines post.

Well, who wouldn't want to be an image model right? And for such a lovely place such as Coron, I really wouldn't mind being the face of Coron in their promotions.  This site however, is not the official website of the city of Coron as well.  Regardless, the moment I knew they were using my picture, I emailed them to convey my dismay and frustration and asked them to remove my picture from their site if they weren't willing to pay for the picture.  Yes, you read that right, I officially peddled my shirtless picture for a very small fee.  If anyone is interested in more illicit pictures, let me know! I'll give you a good price. hahaha (^o^)/

What Will It be Worth

After graduating last April 2010, I finally got around to going back to Ateneo to get this.  Surprisingly, it wasn't that inconvenient to get it.  I was afraid that since I already lost whatever receipt I had that it would be impossible to get it just by appearing at the Registrar.  I was happy to know that all I had to do was present any valid ID which I have ready in my wallet at all times.  The question now is ... will it be worth anything to me in the years to come?

(Master in Business Administration Diploma)

The diploma of course, is just a symbolic representation of what a student (supposedly) has really acquired in school ... and that is Knowledge, Wisdom, and Experience that one can carry on one's shoulders forever.  So it may show its worth, I hope my shoulders are broad enough to carry it in the years to come. (Whatever that means. hehehe)

Close Encounters

The last time I talked about close encounters, I wrote about my diving trip in Bohol more than a couple of years back.  This time I wanna write about close encounters with death.  Have you ever had any?  It was with these encounters that I realized that somebody must definitely be looking out for me.  Read on to know more about my close encounters with the Grim Reaper. *cue thunderbolt and lightning followed by evil laugh*

The first encounter probably happened when I was around 10 years old.  It was a cool afternoon and I was just learning how to ride a bike.  I remember my bike having 2 small side wheels attached to the rear wheel.  These are what they called "balancers."  They prevent the bike from tipping over to either side and thus help the rider achieve balance all the time.  I was playing alone in front of our store right along the commercial district of the china town in our city.  (I wonder where my cousins, who were my usual playmates, were at this time.)  Right at the side of the stretch of stores beside ours was a driveway leading back to where we lived and also to where our Minica yard was.  (Minicas are "mini cars" that were used as public utility vehicles in the city of Davao before Taxis were introduced.)  Connecting the driveway to the pavement in front of the stores was a small ramp.  I believe this was placed there so that transporting products with the use of a wheelbarrow-like tool would be easier.  It so happened that this ramp was also perfect to ride through with my bike!  The ramp wasn't even a foot high but, at that age, the thrill of additional speed that the ramp brought was more than enough for me.

You probably have a guess as to what my first encounter was already.  I'm pretty sure you guessed it right.  It was exactly just that.  After riding through the ramp for several times, I totally forgot that it was a driveway and just went on sliding away in the ramp with my bike.  When suddenly, from my left, I heard the screeching sound of rubber violently rubbing against concrete.  When I looked to my side, a red Minica was just an inch away from hitting my arm.  I even remember seeing the driver sporting a distressed look with both arms raised and then waved up and down signifying a close call.  As for me, I remember being shocked but just for a moment.  I quickly turned around and got my bike up the ramp again joyfully riding my bike as if nothing happened.  *whew!*

The next encounters weren't as close a call compared to that first one but these may have just been as equally shocking and frightening for my young soul.  All next 3 encounters actually involved drainage systems or canals to be exact!  In two of them, I fell into one!  One was around waist deep while the other one was only toe deep so I wasn't really that worried.  What I really didn't like though was how it made me smell afterwards! hahaha (^o^)/  The third one involved a little bit of stunt.  I must have been a frustrated stunt man back then (high school) when i tried to jump off a jeep that was making an accelerating start.  All common sense and wit went out the window when I decided to jump out of the semi-moving vehicle without asking the driver to stop first.  All this simply for a bag that I left behind in one of the canteens near the school.  I fell flat on my belly with both hands propped in front to support my fall.  Surprisingly, the chocolate shake I was gripping on my left remained intact!  I even remember taking a sip before I shyly threw it away into the canal (PG: Kids don't do this!)  after hearing some bystanders comment about me still drinking a possibly soiled milkshake.  I didn't realize it back then but I am definitely thankful now that I didn't fall flat into the canal when I jumped!  It was just a step away from where I fell.  And most importantly, I am thankful that I came out these incidents with not even a scratch in my body that I can remember of.

The picture above is the new playground of the iconic Harana Restaurant in Davao.  Way back when I was young, it used to have a playground probably thrice as big as the one standing now.  Unfortunately, with rising real estate prices, the old playground had to be removed and relocated to its present location.  Everything looks new and they all look sturdier.  (Except for that turning thing on the left! I believe it's the same one.) I went back to check whether the metal swing I used to play with  was still there but I couldn't find it.  Not even a similar looking swing was present.  To give you an idea on what it looked like see the swing photo on the left.  Then imagine rusty metal linings around the wood and on some of the bars. (Made out of the same material with that turning thing on the left!)  It was in this type of swing that I had the most bizarre experience.  Every time I remember the incident I still am in disbelief as to how it turned out to be.  Here's what happened.

My cousins and I were playing by this swing and enjoying every moment of it.  Since there were a lot of us, not everyone could take the ride at the same moment.  So some were left to wait for their turn and were encouraged to push the swing to make it go higher.  When it was my turn to push, a bigger and older cousin was pushing it with me.  Bad idea.  He was more powerful and his arms were longer.  When the swing swung back and it was time to push, I was still holding on to the swing when suddenly my bigger cousin already pushed the swing with all his might!  This brought me forward together with the swing.  I remember taking baby steps trying to regain my balance but I was too slow.  As the swing came back, my footing slipped in the loose soil and before I knew it, my lower body was thrown under the swing.  The swing came to a halt just at it came in contact with my upper thigh.  With the weight of all my cousins and the momentum from the push, I still can't fathom up to now how one tiny child's thigh was able to stop that amount of momentum.  And to think that I was still able to stand afterwards and was only left with a tiny bruise in my right thigh, I cannot help but think that there was divine intervention.  My angel must have come to my rescue.

Talking about Angels, have I ever told you that I totally felt its presence during my Confirmation?  Just as when it was my turn in the queue to face the officiating priest and as he tapped his "staff" (or whatever he was holding at that time - or was it just his hand?) on my head, I felt a soothing heat descend from my head down to my body.  Unlike getting a "high blood" where blood rushes to your head making you feel warm in the head, this one was from the tip of my head going down!  Believe me, I can totally differentiate the experience as I get "high blood" all the time. hahaha

Well, it's good to know that probably somebody else out there is looking out for me.  I haven't felt its presence though for a long time now.  If ever I've lost it, I'm determined to get it back. (o^^o)

-0-

What a long read.  Sorry for that.  When I conceptualized it in my head, it didn't sound so long. hehehe.

Fun Run!

It was my first fun run ever! Joined the HSBC 135 Fun Run in Davao last November 6, 2010.  It was a gloomy start as the sky was weeping early in the day.  It eventually gave way though to the hundreds of enthusiasts who just couldn't be stopped.  Someone must have offered it a giant Kleenex.  I joined the 5 kilometer event and still managed to keep it FUN (get it?) despite some people who tried to pass me only to stop right in front of my run path (more like jogging really).  hehehe (^o^)v Surprised myself as well when I finished in 30'46"! (personal timer not the official one).  I thought it would take me around 45 minutes.

I have to admit, the professional runners who were already on their way back to the start/finish even when I just passed the 1.5km mark was motivating yet demotivating as well.

The challenge would be to finish a FULL MARATHON (42 km.)!  But the penultimate goal would be to finish the IRON MAN! hahaha. *good luck my toes, my knees, my shoulder, my head!*

*Thank you the organizers (HSBC with FishTank Productions) for a wonderful event.
*Thank you BR for taking my picture.

Oh! Before I forget! Thank you Ria Jose of MyDavaoCity.com for sponsoring me.  You've not only made the SOS Children beneficiaries happy but this child as well ^^ Sa uulitin.

Win 2 Million Pesos!

I am writing this post to mark the 1st time I joined a contest in Facebook!  My entry got the most Likes at around 127 and the most comments at around 80, almost half more than those of the closest competitors, but sadly (,by some magical powers in Century Tuna,) it wasn't enough.  I guess I'll have to figure out another way to get my hands on a LUMIX digital compact camera.  It was the only reason why I joined.  The first prize was a LUMIX LX5 and there weren't that many joining the contest. See the photo entry and learn where you can win 2 million pesos after the jump.

Sun Jun is sour graping and has decided to switch to San Marino Corned Tuna!  hihihi. They're giving away 2 Million Pesos!  Honestly though, ever since I went back home to Davao, I've never had to open a can of tuna.  (^o^)/ Life is not perfect but good. ^^

Bygones

I decided that today would be the perfect day to write about my WORD.  I'm such in a good mood today.  If I don't start writing about it today, then tomorrow, when my mood changes, I might not write about it at all ever.  As a matter of fact, I've been in a good mood for a couple of weeks now, ever since I finished writing that article and thought of my Word.

My positive outlook may have been connected with the performance of the Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) as well.  The PSEi closed at an all time high of 3902.56  yesterday, surpassing the index way back in 2007 before the global economic crisis hit.  This makes me happy because most of my income these past couple of years have been from trading in the stock market.  This week though, I got out a week too early and so I'm still waiting for the market to correct before I buy again.   If everything works out fine, I might squeeze out another 10% before the year ends. *fingers-crossed* (Southeast Asian markets are among the top earners worldwide this year.)

Another reason why I chose today to officially announce my Word is because today happens to be World Suicide Prevention day.  I heard it in the news earlier.  And I couldn't believe it when I saw how much Japan spent last year on matters related to suicide.  The exact amount escapes me as of the moment but if my chinky eyes saw the monitor correctly, it was about 32 billion dollars!  Imagine that?!  With that kind of amount, I wonder how many hungry people we would be able to feed here in the Philippines.  Well, I just thought that maybe if the Japanese knew how to use my Word then there wouldn't be that many suicide cases in Japan.  The news report also said that in Japan they consider feeling lonely and depressed as a weakness while committing suicide as something honorable.  *tsk tsk tsk* (hand me the toothpick please, there's something stuck in between my teeth)

So here goes.  The word I've chosen for myself is simply "Bygones."  You've probably guessed that already from the title.  Richard Fish of Ally McBeal helped me find that word.  It was his favorite expression in the sitcom.  With the word comes the promise of learning how to let go of the past in favor of starting new beginnings for the future.  It also comes with a new concept I learned from the same book (Eat Pray Love) about controlling your thoughts.  Sometimes I tend to over think and generate thoughts beyond what actually transpired which usually leads me to loathness and anger.  It just dawned on me that my thoughts can actually be controlled as well.  I hope to put my instincts to better use, maybe into something that can be more productive like the stock market.  And the girl who would be able to say the same thing back to me, probably even do a little math and multiply it by itself, would be the ideal one.

Next thing I wanna learn is how not to worry about money ever.  Okay, maybe a little worry is good but a little too much can be unhealthy as well.  As for tomorrow, I will go out to celebrate and eat Lechon served 5 different ways!  Looking forward to it.  Have a great weekend everyone.

After thought:
>- In Japan, they actually have a TV ad to help prevent suicide.  In the ad, they hired a young professional soccer player who plays for the national team to deliver the message "kizuite hoshii, kokoro no koe o" which translates to "take heed of the voice in your heart" or as Beyonce might put it ... Listen to the song in your heart. (^o^)/

Let's play a game of WHATs

Let's play a game of Whats.  It's very simple.  I've prepared three questions, all inspired by the book Eat Pray Love, beginning with the question word 'What'.  It starts with the very simple question "What's your favorite gelato flavor?".  The next 2 however won't be that easy.  I'll share my views and I hope to hear from you as well.  Let me just warn you in advance that this post has the potential of becoming as long as my previous post After Omphaloskepsis. Life's a Charm, you have been forewarned. (^o^)v  I promise to keep it short and simple though in the spirit of the Italian expression "Parla Come Mangi".

Let's Play! (Continue Reading to play)

What's your favorite Gelato flavor?

I love Gelato!  It's one of my favorite desserts.  Elizabeth Gilbert, author of the book Eat Pray Love, must have loved it too - when she was in Rome she ate Gelato all day long!  My favorite flavors are Pistaccio, Chocolate Mint, and Chili Chocolate!

Personally, I find the Pistaccio flavored gelatos being offered by gelato shops here in the Philippines not come up to par with the one I tasted back in Rome (2006).  I don't know if it's because of the quality of the ingredients, the originality, or simply because it was the first gelato I tasted.  Regardless, every time Pistaccio is available, I am almost certain I would order it.

Chocolate Mint, on the other hand, is good anywhere in the world (Rome, Australia, Philippines)!  If you want something that would never fail to satisfy your taste buds, order this.  Chocolate and mint just goes very well.

And if you haven't tried it yet, chocolate also goes very well with chili! (Just don't overdo the chili and make sure the spiciness is well blended into the mixture. Put a dash in your next cup of hot choco, you'll love it.)  And when I was in Greenbelt 5 (Manila) last month, I found Chili Chocolate as one of Gelatissimo's offering.  I wasn't disappointed.  I have yet to find any other gelato shop that carry this flavor.  I'm not sure though if it's a regular offering.  Surprisingly, there's more Gelatissimo outlets in Cebu!  Two to be exact.  One in SM City Cebu and one in Ayala Center.  And not so surprisingly, there's none in Davao.  If you're in Davao, the next best thing would probably be to go to Crepelato in Mayon St.

What do you think?

It was a friend who brought up this topic a few years back and I didn't believe it at all back then.  I was (so naive and was) for bringing a child into this world to allow it to experience LIFE. (Understandably, that was when my life seemed perfect - not too far back) However, as the years progressed, I'm starting to believe it more myself.  Do parents bear children more for selfish reasons - meaning for their own sake - rather than anything else? What do you think?

Elizabeth Gilbert wrote "I think people have children for all manners of reasons - sometimes out of a pure desire to nurture and witness life, sometimes out of an absence of choice, sometimes in order to hold on to a partner or create an heir, sometimes without thinking about it in any particular way.  Not all the reasons to have children are the same, and not all of them are necessarily unselfish.  Not all the reasons not to have children are the same, either, though."

Richard Fish, lawyer played by actor Greg Germann in famous TV series Ally McBeal, had this to say - "Having a child is a selfish thing.  Couples don't walk around wanting to give life.  They say 'we want a child, .. we want, we want."  It's a selfish thing.  Not that it's a good selfish but it's selfish."

What's your WORD?

And finally, we come to the last 'what' question 'What's your word?'.  One of the Italians that Liz met in her travels suggested something like every city and every person having a word.  A city's word is what majority of the people living in that city are thinking about and it supposedly defines that city.  While a person's word is what defines that person - how that person thinks.  And the catch is, for someone to belong - to feel at home - in a particular city, that person has to have the same word as the city.

Rome's word is supposedly "SEX", the Vatican's is "POWER", Naples' is "FIGHT", New York's is "ACHIEVE", Los Angeles's is "SUCCEED", and Stockholm's is "CONFORM."

When I was studying in UP Diliman (Quezon City), I would say the word that time inside the campus was "EXCEL."  Although I stayed in Makati City just recently for a month, I still don't have a clue as to what the city's word really is.  It must be because most people actually just go there to work, to shop, or to enjoy.  People from different cities therefore come and go, bringing with them different words in the process .... perhaps "BUSINESS?" / "WORK?" / "VARIETY?" / "LUXURY?" - Let me think about it more.

In my 3 years in Cebu I would say the word is "IDENTITY."  Cebuanos are a mix culture of different identities from the affluent mestizos to the not-so-underground bisdak society.  What I love about them is their strong sense of identity and their pride as Cebuanos.  And being not afraid to express all that.

In my 4 years in Sapporo City, or in Japan generally, I would say the word is "CAREFUL" or "RESPECT."  Everybody there seemed to walk while thinking all along not to bump anyone, not to step on anyone's toes, or even simply not to talk or approach anyone you don't know.  Voices even have to be kept at a low volume so as not to disturb anybody who might be nearby.  Would you believe it when I say that one of my Jap colleague refused to recline his airline seat simply because somebody was seated behind him? And did you notice how they can expertly fold their newspaper so as it doesn't invade the space of the passenger seated next to them?  Unbelievable.  The only exceptions to this are probably the Yakuza-like individuals.

If you ask me, I think Davao's word is "OBEY." (or maybe "ORDERLY")  Most, if not all, Dabawenyos are law-abiding.  Alcohol curfew is strictly followed at 2am.  It is not even uncommon, although becoming rare, to find a jeepney driver who's willing to give way in traffic.  And the epitome of it all is the Kadayawan festival.  Just watch the parade tomorrow and you'll see what I mean.  Street dancing participants are widely spaced out while onlookers are cordoned off way to the side.  It just doesn't have the same feel as the Sinulog festival of Cebu.  It's as if the city is not celebrating a festival at all.  But I do love Davao.

Now, I'm conflicted.  I still have yet to find my word but it certainly isn't "OBEY."
And Oh! Happy Kadayawan! And I know I should just have written 3 different posts! hehehe

Identity Crisis @ 31

I've always had issues with my name.  I don't like it that much.  For one, there is the bewildered expression I get from friends when they come to know that I have a different surname than the rest of my family.  It always makes an interesting conversation piece.  A topic that can be personal, which can be good for opening up, without being too personal for me.  However, interesting as it may be, sometimes it just doesn't amuse me.

And then there's my first name which has been interpreted more than a couple of times.  People in my hometown of Davao City know me as Stephen (stef-en) but I grew up with a nickname of "Pen".  When I moved to Manila to attend university, my name became Stephen (stee-fuhn).  And people began calling me Steph (steef), which was perfectly fine for me as this was the most acceptable pronunciation of my name in the whole Philippines.  Or so I thought, because when I moved to Cebu people found it weird to call me Steph (steef), as for them, this nick is mostly used for girls with a name of Stephanie.  And so variations like "Tep" and "Tebs" arised.  Tep from sTEPhen and Tebs as short for Esteban, which I guess is the Tagalog version of my name. (Worst of all some would call me Phen ("Fen!"), I can't think of anybody who would want to be called that?!)

And the variations didn't stop there.  In Japan people referred to me as su-te-fan which is pronounce as Stefan, the same as that of the great Swedish tennis player Stefan Edberg.  I tried to correct them but it was futile.  Any other pronunciation would require additional syllables which would be awkward to pronounce in Japanese.  And so I settled for this, as this was the most natural for the Japanese and I didn't mind being called the same way as Edberg, a tennis legend in his own right.  And lastly, western friends would refer to me as Steven (stee-vuhn), and would shorten it to Steve, which is the American way and probably the international pronunciation of my name.

No doubt, all these names have caused their share of confusion.  A college friend once called me up in my uncle's house in Manila and my cousin, who also hails from Davao, answered the phone.  "Hello," my friend asked, "may I talk with stee-fuhn. please." "Ha?," goes my cousin and after a brief pause came to realize that it was for me and says, "Ahh ... si stef-en."

These all adds to the mystery that is me but what I can't stop pondering is whether if I could have confused myself in the process as well? No doubt, this identity crisis has gotten into me as well.  Tsk tsk tsk.

One good thing I can think of that can be derived from this whole experience is the fact that it would be easy to recognize where and what time in my life I met someone by the way they would call me.  But I guess this is looking at the glass way half-full right?  Or as we engineers would see it, the glass is 50% full!

And so I am planning to internationalize my name soon.  I think the best way to go, especially if my plans push through, would be to use Stephen (stee-vuhn).  What do you think?

And oh yeah, before I forget, did I mention that I went through 3 different Chinese names as well? This makes me wanna say Vaffanculo! (Just a little Italian a learned today (^o^)v)

After Omphaloskepsis

Do not believe everything that you read.

1

That's another thing I got from Anonymous Lawyer.  Do not believe everything that you read!  Especially those written by bloggers. hehehe (^o^)/  I finally finished the book and was devastated with the ending. *sigh*  For the first time I actually felt sympathetic for the jerk and didn't root for the underdogs.

I realized that this may have something to do with me feeling that I have been the underdog all my life.  Although I feel it, most people around me probably don't perceive me as such.  I guess I'm really not one then if the people's perception don't reflect it.  It's about time to start feeling like a champion and being one, I guess.

2

I discovered something last week.  When I dream of paradise, I dream of myself lounging by the sea surrounded by fine white sand and clear blue skies, smelling the cool crisp air, listening to the rhythmic splashes of the waves, and drinking an ice cold buko juice (coconut juice) complete with a tiny umbrella.  I noticed that I had the beach all to myself.  There were no people swimming on the beach, no children making sand castles by the shore, not even extra lounge chairs by my side.  There was only one chair and I was on it.
If ever you've seen yourself the same way, you're probably the only company you'll ever need.  The world will never be to your liking and people will continue to disappoint you because they will never be you.  Imagine your vision of paradise.  Maybe you'll learn something from it.

3

There were some quotes from Agassi's book that I forgot to write about.  One was when he wrote "I play and keep playing because I choose to play.  Even if it's not your ideal life, you can always choose it.  No matter what your life is, choosing it changes everything." Because believe it or not, Agassi hated tennis and yet he excelled playing tennis and became one of the greatest champions of all time.

And Anonymous Lawyer had this to say about the Musician who has decided to pursue music instead of practicing law after graduation, "For some reason, no one ever wonders "what if" they don't pursue a career at a big law firm ... It's not brave to pursue impossible dreams.  It's brave to put those dreams aside and suck it up and choose a real job instead.  It's brave to fight through the imaginary "crisis of the soul" and realize that most people don't love their jobs but they do them anyway."

For that matter, I don't believe someone ever wondered "what if I pursued a career in software programming?" as well.  Nevertheless, just choose to love whatever you're doing and although you might not become as great as Agassi you might still get that applause from your peers.

"I tell the players: You'll hear a lot of applause in your life, fellas, but none will mean more to you than that applause from your peers.  I hope each of you hears that at the end." - Andre Agassi -

Do everything well and do it the best you can and people, even your competition, will respect you for it.  Surround yourself with people that will appreciate your skill and whatever else there is that you have to give.

4

And yes, this blog hasn't always been truthful.  In a way, I use this blog to project a world  (my world) where the glass is always half full.  Writing it really makes a difference.  It makes you internalize it more than when you've just thought about it.  I guess the sentence "Convince yourself" would apply here.  It will help you keep your sanity but only for a while.  Sooner or later the bubble will burst.  (And when it does, just start writing again. hehehe (^o^)/)

5

If you're wondering about the title, check this article called "If you gain wisdom from staring at your belly button it's omphaloskepsis ..."  Simply put it's like meditating while thinking or probably looking at your navel area.  There's some interesting trivia about our belly button in the article.  If you're interested, or have nothing better to do, check it out. (^o^)v

Again, do not believe everything that you read.

The Great Camiguin Island Adventure

Played with Sony Vegas Movie Studio for the first time.   The added flexibility compared to Windows Movie Maker definitely makes it harder to use but it's all worth it!  It took me one whole day to learn the software and make this AVP for our Camiguin adventure a couple of weeks back.  Hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed making it.

(I definitely to practice more on sound editing ... one of the hardest without a real sound editing software! - any suggestions for this?)

From P to F

It takes 2 strokes to write a "P."  It takes 3 strokes to write an "F."  But more strokes to cross out any letter in the alphabet.  I wonder what drives a professor to write a "P", cross it out, and change it to an "F!"

Well, so much for me being an outlier.  I got 78% in my Strategic Management exam.  Just 2% short of passing it.  I guess this means I will have to retake the exam this Saturday.  But right now, I'm seriously considering petitioning my answers and trying to squeeze out 2 more points just to make it to "P".  It's worth a try.  Not only because it will save me time but because the exam is worth 1,200 pesos.  Universities definitely know how to make money.  That's why students wonder why they need to increase tuition fees every year. (^o^)v

Tomorrow I'm ready to go full force even if I have to declaim and say "alms, alms, alms. Spare me a piece of bread. Spare me your mercy. Spare me 2 points!"   hahaha (^o^)/  - so elementary school - Just remembering some moments back in grade school.  I wonder if they still do declamation / oratorical contests now.

Well ok.  Just to make me feel a little better, although it really doesn't matter that much for me now.  I heard that I topped one subject, placed 2nd in the next, and got a perfect score in another.  Hmmm ... I wonder whether these are all true. (But I can still hear Yoda say "But failed StratMan, You did." hahaha)

Well Appreciated

I just came home from a 3 hour long exam in Marketing Management and this is what greeted me when I entered the house.

Cruchy Sesame Peanuts!

It's one of my favorites.  I love it.  Now who would want to leave home when you're this well-taken cared of right?  I don't normally like it when I'm being treated like a baby but I guess tonight is an exception and all along maybe it's what I really want deep down inside.  I may never be this appreciative again, or it might take a long while before this happens again, so I'm gonna just write it down and say "Thank You Ma! Thank You Pa!"  You guys always think of me and I seldom show you my appreciation.  Might as well say Happy Mother's and Father's day in advance! hehehe (^o^)/

Tomorrow will be my Managerial Statistics exam.  After that, will be my Financial Management exam.  And the day after that will be Production Management.  And finally on Saturday will be the most dreaded exam in Strategic Management! After a week of agonizing and energy-draining exams, it's no wonder why most students fail the first time they take this.  Anybody would have to be superman just to survive this week!  And thinking of the 37 paged case study that our professor is planning on giving us, just makes you lose your spirit.  I think it will take me 2 hours just to read and analyze that.  That leaves me maybe just an hour or so to finish my written analysis of a case.

"There will always be a first time."  There will always be Outliers!  With the school jokes running around, most students already view this sentence negatively.  I however, choose to view it positively.  I will be that Outlier!  I will be that statistical anomaly!  Not on the left, not on the middle, but way to the right of the curve - way above the mean! (^o-)v

And the reason for my success will be .....         will be .....

... these very delectable crunchy sesame peanuts!  Let me worry about the pimples next week!

Hacked Into Someone else's Internet Connection

I'm so happy with what I accomplished today! I found two new wireless internet connections at home.  One is an unsecured connection and the other is a secured one.  Yes, I successfully hacked my way into somebody else's internet connection!  Some people are so predictable hehehe (^o^)/

Too bad the signal doesn't reach as far as my bedroom.  I have to stay outside at the terrace to get the signal - but it's very strong and the connection is considerably fast! woohoo!  But what good is more than one internet connection, right?  Well, if you have more than one PC then you can use separate connections to browse the internet.  This way you can have one dedicated PC for downloading alone, maximize the bandwidth of that connection. (^o^)/  And another advantage is when there's something wrong with your own connection, you can try the others and see if you can connect through them. Well, not really a significant advantage for me right now but I'm just loving the fact that I was able to guess somebody else's password. he he he he

Mahal Kita Kasi (Because I Love You)

Just in time for Valentine's day.  A cheesy but still funny love song from Nicole Hyala entitled "Mahal Kita Kasi."  Found this on facebook.  Finally signed up for it just a few days back (to keep my promises).  Add me up - look for "Stephen Hb", the man in a surf board (^o-)/.  Continue reading to see the video.  Enjoy!

I'm still not totally comfortable with Facebook.  I must be getting really old. hehehe (^o^)/

Mission Accomplished!

Wondering what this is? Continue reading it to know the story.

This is my pin collection.  I've been collecting them since I started traveling.  I started with key chains though, as those are more common to find.  Some of these I bought while on a trip, some were given by family and friends, some are rare finds from my parents' old table drawers, while some are marks of achievements and accomplishments.

Up until this week, these have been hiding in the dark, inside an old shoe box.  I never really knew how I should display them until I found this thick picture frame.  I didn't just want to pin them on canvas and display them because doing so will expose them to dust and they could fall off and be lost forever.

I am happy that I am finally able to display them.  But sad as well, as I can't help but notice that some of the pins are missing!  I wonder what happened to them.  Especially my Coca-Cola World Cup pin collection.  If you look at the picture closely, you can see 4 pins forming a Coca-Cola bottle shape in the middle section.  Although these seem to fit, the 3rd piece from the top is actually the same that of the 2nd piece but only with a different picture on it.  I remember painstakingly buying Coke every time I came back from work back in Japan.  I knew I was able to complete 1 bottle set and almost complete a 2nd one as well!  But now, I can't find the rest ...  This makes me feel a bit sad because these pins have traveled a long way from Japan to Manila to Cebu and now in Davao.  If I had  at least one complete set, that would have been enough but now I know I'll always wonder what happened to that 3rd piece.

Well, I guess that's life.  We try so hard to hold on to and keep things that are valuable to us hidden inside a box, where we think it's safe but where it's value can't be fully appreciated.  And then life happens.  And before we know it, we lose the chance to live life and appreciate whatever we have.

Now that this frame is done, I look forward to adding more pins from my future travels!  And I hope to be able to come up with a new one in a few years time.  Not to forget, the other shoe box full of key chains! What should I do with those?! (^o^)/
