Badminton Tournament Update

With images of myself making great plays constantly flashing in my dreams, it was hard to get any shut eye just the night before the tournament. I was up 6am and was gearing to go! This time I made sure I didn't forget to bring my shoes to the tournament site. Once, back in Cebu, I totally forgot to bring my shoes as I was expecting it to be inside the car already where I usually put it. But then I didn't realize that I took it out the night before to clean it and then forgot to store it back in the car. Hence, I had to go back to my apartment to get it, missing my first game, to the angst of my partner. Last Saturday though, no such incident happened. In fact, I was one of the earliest person in the site.

In day 1 of the tournament we were scheduled to play two games. One early in the morning and the next one the last match in the afternoon. We didn't like the schedule at all as we would be spending most of the day waiting! I could have gone to school for my classes and my partner could have gone back to work. Well, in between games, we contented ourselves with watching our friends' games instead.

Battling through the cheap shuttles the organizers made us play with, we managed to score 21 points before losing to our opponents 30-21. It was a disappointing start. However, after having eaten a big serving of spaghetti for lunch and then another bowl of gulami (beef stew with beef strips and noodles) for snacks, we found renewed energy to beat the team from Bukidnon 30-25 in our last match for the day. We we're losing hope to enter the semi-final round as the team that beat us were 3-0 up already, not losing a single game still, and only the top team per bracket gets to qualify. We still have two games to go the following day though, so we thought why not just go the next day and continue playing anyway.

Day 2 started on time as well. It was interesting to see that there were now only half the people there compared to day 1. Well, I guess, most of those who have lost hope went home and decided not to come back anymore. Well, as for us, we stayed for our games and followed the games of the varsity players and the legends like Ronald Damiel and Melvin Llanes. And another interesting match to look forward to was the match between the team that beat us (another team from Davao) and the Bukidnon team that my partner and I beat. The Bukidnon team needs to win this match to force a tie with the Davao team in order to qualify in our bracket. Also, if the Bukidnon team wins and my partner and I win our remaining games, we would force a triple tie in our bracket.

In an exciting match, the Bukidnon team beats the other Davao team comfortably. Which made my partner and I ponder as to why we lost to that team at all! Well, everyone's thinking at this time that it would be the Bukidnon team that would qualify by a win-over-the-other system and I would have been left with a consolation that we were the only team to beat the qualifying team. However, by a stroke of luck and by an unconventional point system method, one of our remaining opponents decided to default out and give us the match, sending our points way over the other 2 teams! Yes! We qualify! We're back on track and on our route to the semi-final round! (^o^)/

In the semi-finals, we face another out of town team. This time we were outclassed and lost the match in 2 straight sets. As a consolation, our opponents went on to win the tournament. If only we got to play any of the other 2 teams from Davao who qualified in the semi-finals, we would have had a better fighting chance. There was no price for 3rd place so the game to break the tie between the semi-final round losers was no longer played. That would have been an interesting match just to see how we would fair with the other team.

Sometimes, talent alone will not get you the trophy, you need a considerable amount of luck as well. hehehe (^o^)/ Well, on to our next tournament ...

Tomorrow Draws Nearer

As Saturday draws nearer, the tension is building up. I actually skipped my Accounting class today just so I can practice with my partner. Having not played together a lot, tactical play and rotational problems still needed to be tweaked a bit. I hope we do good tomorrow. We definitely are not sandbagging this time. In fact, we will be the underdogs. Our only ace probably is that still not a lot of players know my game which my partner and I can use to our advantage.

Each team has to go battle through 5 elimination rounds. The team with the best record in the group moves on to the finals round. The finals will be played on Sunday. (^^;)

Excited!

I haven't been this excited in a while! Ever since I came back to Davao, I haven't joined a single (local) badminton tournament! I miss the thrill! I miss the competition! I miss the excitement! I miss the adrenalin rush! But all these will be satisfied by next weekend! I just hope the depression after losing and going through all the exhaustion won't be there to greet me as well! hihihi (^O^)/

Luckily, I was able to find a new partner and I will finally be able to join a tournament again! To cap it off, Pepsi might sponsor our registration fee as well! Super win-win for me!

Drooling to get back in action!

Beijing Olympics Update: Tennis (Federer) and Badminton (Lin Dan)

News Flash!

James Blake of the USA beats the No. 1 seeded player Roger Federer in two straight sets, 6-4 7-6(2). Disappointment all over the No. 1 seed's face as he waves goodbye to the olympic crowd one last time. (Picture at right) The cloak of invincibility around him has definitely been shattered. Will he still be able to regain his crown?

Other Quarterfinal matches not yet completed as of press time:
Novak Djokovic (SRB) vs. Gael Monfils (FRA)
Jurgen Melzer (AUT) vs. Rafael Nadal (ESP)
Paul-Henri Mathieu (FRA) vs. Fernando Gonzalez (CHI)

On the women's side, Elene Dementieva beats Serena Williams 3-6 6-4 6-3 at their quarterfinal match. Sister Venus is currently on court battling it out against China's Li Na.

At the Beijing University of Technology Gymnasium, Badminton's no. 1 player, Super Dan however, out powered Peter Gade of Denmark 21-13 21-16 to advance to the semifinals. He faces fellow countryman Chen Jin who beat Hsieh Yu-Hsing of Taipei in straight sets. The other semifinals will be contested by Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia and Lee Hyunil of Korea.

Could this be Lin Dan's olympic year? Or will Lee Chong Wei produce Malaysia's first gold medal ever in the olympic games? So much drama.

Super Dan!

On the women's side, tomorrow's semifinals will feature three Chinese players: Xie Xingfang, Lu Lan, and defending Olympics champion Zhang Ning. The 4th contender is no other than the conqueror of 4th seed Tine Rasmussen, indonesia's up and coming star, Maria Kristin Yulianti.

Badminton Olympics Update: Tine Rasmussen and Taufik Hidayat Out!

I can't find badminton or tennis coverage from our local cable operator! It's very disappointing. I hope they cover the semifinals and finals matches.

Update for Day 3:

Ladies Singles:

Denmark's ace who has been showing impressive form this year, Tine Rasmussen, was beaten today by Indonesia's Maria Kristin Yulianti 21-18 19-21 14-21. Impressive start from the young Indonesian, proving Indonesian players' toughness once again when it comes to the major events.

Top seeds Xie Xingfang and Zhang Ning beat their respective opponents comfortably to advance to the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Saina Nehwal, you might remember her from winning the Philippine Open a couple of years back, upset no. 6 seed Wang Chen of Hong Kong to advance to the quarterfinals.

Men's Singles:

Lin Dan, Lee Chong Wei, Peter Gade, Bao Chunlai all advance to the next round without much problem. Taufik Hidayat, defending Olympic Champion, however, loses in two straight sets, 21-19 21-16 to Malaysia's Wong Choong Hann. The defending champion considerably not in tip top shape as he suffered from Dengue fever just a few weeks back. I wish Indonesia sent Simon Santoso instead!

Women's Doubles:

Top seeds and defending champions Yang Wei and Zhang Jiewen of China suffers a loss at the hands of unseeded Japanese shuttlers Maeda Miyuki and Setsuna Satoko.

Mixed Doubles:

Round of 16 (1st round) starts tomorrow in blazing fashion, featuring a rematch between Athens Olympics finalists Gail Emms and Nathan Robertson and two time champion Gao Ling with new partner Zheng Bo! (I wanna see this match! Please somebody air it online or over cable TV!)

100 PUSH UP Update: Kulelat!

I'm taking the 100 Push Up Challenge.

I'm suppose to be entering my 5th week tomorrow but instead, I'm still on Day 1 of the 4th week. Finding time to do my push ups have been challenging. Most of the times, I postpone my exercise because I've just taken a bath for the day and I don't want to be sweaty and smelly before leaving the house. And then I forget to do the exercise later in the day! This caused me to be delayed by a week but I'm still on the challenge. After all, the goal is to simply (?) to be able to do 100 push ups at one go.

I just finished Day 3 of Week 3 shown above. I follow column 3, by the way. It's getting really tough every week! The chart says to rest for 120 seconds before the next repetition but I'm definitely taking more than that. It allows me to do so anyway. Usual session takes me about 30 minutes to complete one set. This has limited my exercise to push ups and badminton only (trying to fit a game of tennis in my schedule as well). I've not done any yoga, pilates, or yogilates recently. I miss pilates because it was producing results for my core muscles (abs area). Not only did my abs feel firmer but my badminton game actually improved on a massive scale because of it. Massive equates to being able to beat the best player in the group in a singles match. (^O^)/

Day 1 of Week 4 is next! Come to think of it, every session, I'm doing more than a 100 push ups already! That's more than all the push ups I've done before in my life. The results are beginning to show as well. Hopefully, I'm motivated enough to continue this to the end and be able to produce the hundred at one go. Wish me luck ...

Chasing after Taufik Hidayat

Here I am at the lower right bottom of the picture chasing after the guy in pink stripes shirt, Taufik Hidayat.

Taufik Hidayat is arguably Indonesia's best badminton single's player ever. He has won all major titles there is to win in badminton including the Olympics. Lin Dan, reigning world champion and no. 1 player in the world, has not won the Olympic gold medal yet.

So I went to Singapore last June to watch the Aviva Singapore Badminton Open. Although Taufik was registered to play, for some reason unknown to me, he backed out when the tournament started. However, he was gracious enough to make an appearance during the breaks so as not to disappoint the fans. Everyone of course scrambled to have a picture taken with him. I was late to the punch as when I saw him, the photo op has ended and the organizer of the event was already calling him for another matter.

I patiently waited though and asked a companion to be ready to take my picture using my Canon 350D. And when he was finished talking with the organizers, I sneaked in and asked if I can have my picture taken with him. Like a true champion respecting a fan's wish, he readily agreed and stood beside me. Cameras clicked and flashes began igniting around us as a throng of fans and photographers who were still following him around realized he was posing for another photo op. I gave it my best smile and stood proudly beside him. I looked around the flashing lights trying to locate where my companion was positioned still smiling all through out. I scanned the people around us from left to right. He was positioned a bit angled to my right and so I turned a bit and gave it my best smile again. To my surprise, no lights or flashes were igniting from my camera! My companion was fumbling with the controls! As I hurriedly went my companion's way to take a quick look at what was wrong, Taufik, probably thinking I already got my shot, was quick to leave the building! aahhh...!

So to make a long story short, I never got my picture with him! Well, at least not on my camera. I probably have one, a clear shot, probably better than the picture above because there were no other people in the background, in somebody else's cam! If you are out there reading this, please send it to me! hehehe (^O^)v

What else did I do in Singapore?

See the local delicacies I was able to savor through the generosity of friends here.
