Beijing Olympics Update: China's first badminton gold, Hope for Federer

China Snatches First Badminton Gold Up for Grab

China snatched the first gold medal up for grabs in the badminton tournament when women's doubles pair Du Jing and Yu Yang beat Korea's Lee Hyo-jung and Lee Kyung-won (21-15 21-13). The bronze medal also went to the Chinese pairing of Wei Yili and Zhang Yawen.

In the men's division, Lin Dan will face off with Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei in the single's competition. While Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia will battle it out against China's Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng. The men's doubles final will be held on August 16 9:30pm while the men's singles final will be held on August 17 at 8:48 pm.

In the women's division, the top seeds Xie Xingfang and Zhang Ning made it to the finals insuring another gold for China. The gold medal will be contested on August 16 at 12nn. Third seed Lu Lan will face Indonesia's Yulianti for the bronze medal match.

Mix double's semifinals matches will commence today.

Hope for Federer

The Olympics is not yet over for Roger Federer! The Swiss no. 1 may just get an olympic gold medal after all. Partnering with countryman Stanislas Wawrinka in the doubles, they advance to the gold medal match beating the favorites, the Bryan brothers of the USA 7-6 (6) 6-4. They will face the Swedish pair of Simon Aspelin and Thomas Johansson in the finals.

Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal closes in on the gold with a semifinal victory over Novak Djokovic. After 2 hours and 10 minutes of play, Rafael Nadal overcame the Serbian in matador fashion 6-4 1-6 6-4. Rafael Nadal will face Fernando Gonzalez of Chile in the finals. Gonzalez won the bronze medal in the Athens 2004 Olympics making him the only man to win back-to-back Olympic medals in Tennis since Charles Winslow in the 1920 Antwerp Games.

Women's semifinal matches will start later today, August 16.
