Beijing Olympics Update: Tennis (Federer) and Badminton (Lin Dan)

News Flash!

James Blake of the USA beats the No. 1 seeded player Roger Federer in two straight sets, 6-4 7-6(2). Disappointment all over the No. 1 seed's face as he waves goodbye to the olympic crowd one last time. (Picture at right) The cloak of invincibility around him has definitely been shattered. Will he still be able to regain his crown?

Other Quarterfinal matches not yet completed as of press time:
Novak Djokovic (SRB) vs. Gael Monfils (FRA)
Jurgen Melzer (AUT) vs. Rafael Nadal (ESP)
Paul-Henri Mathieu (FRA) vs. Fernando Gonzalez (CHI)

On the women's side, Elene Dementieva beats Serena Williams 3-6 6-4 6-3 at their quarterfinal match. Sister Venus is currently on court battling it out against China's Li Na.

At the Beijing University of Technology Gymnasium, Badminton's no. 1 player, Super Dan however, out powered Peter Gade of Denmark 21-13 21-16 to advance to the semifinals. He faces fellow countryman Chen Jin who beat Hsieh Yu-Hsing of Taipei in straight sets. The other semifinals will be contested by Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia and Lee Hyunil of Korea.

Could this be Lin Dan's olympic year? Or will Lee Chong Wei produce Malaysia's first gold medal ever in the olympic games? So much drama.

Super Dan!

On the women's side, tomorrow's semifinals will feature three Chinese players: Xie Xingfang, Lu Lan, and defending Olympics champion Zhang Ning. The 4th contender is no other than the conqueror of 4th seed Tine Rasmussen, indonesia's up and coming star, Maria Kristin Yulianti.
