"Bagong Simula" sa Bagong Taon

Bagong Simula is the official theme song of the BAYANIJUAN Foundation launched by ABS-CBN last June 12, 2008 (Independence day). The foundation "aspires to awaken the giving heart in every Filipino, and to encourage each one, to extend a helping hand so that every man, woman and child in the Philippines has a chance to make all of his or her dreams come true."

Wow! That is some vision. I will be supporting this foundation in the coming years. I hope you guys will do the same. "Walang Iwanan sa bayanijuan!"

Bagong Simula

[Kevin Roy]
Parang isang gabing walang katapusan
Sa bawat mesa, asin lagi ang ulam
umaalog sa alkansya pisong pinagpawisan
Batang nakahubad kumot ang lansangan

[Yael Yuzon]
lupaing kinalbo minsa’y nadidilig
Ng dugo sa away ng kapatid sa kapatid

[Mark Abaya]
Sa kalagayang ito tayo ay nakagapos
Parang awa sana ay dito magtapos
(CHORUS)Todo na to!
Liparin ang langit na bughaw
Pagningningin mga tala at araw
Mamumulang muli ang silangan
sa bagong simula ng ating bayan

[Kitchie NAdal]
wag lang maulit kapalarang kay pait
wag magpabaya wag kang manahimik
wag kang manlalamang, wag kang manggigipit
wag magkanya-kanya, magkaisang bisig

[Yeng Constantino]
Pag malasakit ito’y kabayanihan
gawin mo ano mang makayanan
kalagayan ng baya’y sumasama lamang
kung walang gagawin tayong mamamayan
(Chorus)Todo na to!
Liparin ang langit na bughaw
Pagningningin mga tala at araw
Mamumulang muli ang silangan
sa bagong simula ng ating bayan

[Placid]
Liparin ang langit na bughaw
Pagningningin mga tala at araw
Mamumulang muli ang silangan
sa bagong simula ng ating bayan

[Tugma]
[Narration]
Ipakita natin sa ating mga magulang
mga kapatid kaya natin to
isang subok pa, sabay sabay walang kokontra,

(CHORUS)Todo na to!
Liparin ang langit na bughaw
Pagningningin mga tala at araw
Mamumulang muli ang silangan
sa bagong simula ng ating bayan
Bagong simula ng ating bayan

I am simply in love with the foundation's name. "Bayanijuan" rhymes with "Bayanihan", more over, it can mean "bayan ni juan", and at the same time "bayani si juan" as well.

9 Days Before Christmas

Every December 16, nine days before Christmas, is the start of Simbang Gabi or Misa de Gallo. I just found out today that Gallo is a spanish word which means "rooster." That is why the mass is held early in the morning supposedly just after the rooster crows. Some people believe that if you complete all 9 masses in 9 days, the Almighty Father will grant you a wish. (^o^)/

As for me, I have no plans of attending any this year. Back when I was in Cebu, last year, with the encouragement of friends, I was able to attend the first day of mass, but that was about it. hehehe (^^;)

Instead , this year, I plan to do 9 Days of Jogging before Christmas! One of my wishes is definitely to stay healthy and fit. With conflicting schedules due to school, I'm missing one badminton session every week already. That and having have to taste all my baked goodies have brought about a plumper me. Hopefully I'll be able to do enough to offset all the food I will be eating during the holidays and still lose some weight.

On my next post, I'll show you why it isn't so bad to jog around our subdivision at night during this time of the year.

Merry Christmas Everyone!
Happy Holidays!

Go ReD!

There's a new mobile telecommunications service provider in the country! It's Red Mobile! There TV ad really made me laugh. Just see for yourself.

Clearly, they are targeting SUN cellular subscribers to switch. With a voice call rate of only 50 cents / minute, it's truly a bargain. (^^;) (A lot still can't afford the Php 350 / month unlimited call rate of SUN.  But with Red Mobile's offer, you only have to pay for the calls that you actually make.  I tried SUN's 4 hours plan  at Php 150 before, I couldn't even consume all of it. hehehe ^^)

I've only seen their ad tonight but their TVC's are already in youtube and they have entries in Wikipedia already! Internet marketing has really gone a long way.

And based on that Wikipedia entry, it turns out that Red Mobile was previously marketed as ümobile by CURE (Connectivity Unlimited Resource Enterprise, Inc.) (love the names!) and it's been operating since 2006. It was rebranded to Red Mobile when SMART bought the company March of this year. Now, with SMART people backing it up, I'm sure a lot of people will give this a try. ^^ (Something new for 2009? ^^)

Recipe: Snickerdoodles / Cinnamon Cookies

Snickerdoodles: Cinnamon cOOkies Recipe

Ingredients:

2 1/2 cups All purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp. Cream of tartar
1/2 tsp. Baking soda
1/2 tsp. Salt
1 cup Unsalted Butter
1 cup Sugar
2 pcs. Eggs
2 tsp. Vanilla extract

Topping:
3 tbspns. Sugar
1 1/2 tsps. Cinnamon

Procedue:
1. Preheat oven to 180 C (350 F).
2. Sift together flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
3. Using a creamer, mix butter and sugar until light. Add eggs one at a time. Add vanila extract. Mix well.
4. Add flour mixture to butter mixture. Mix well.
5. In another bowl, mix topping ingredients.
6. Scoop the cookie dough, roll into a ball and then roll into topping mixture. Place in baking pan and bake until desired crispness. When placing in the baking pan make sure to leave ample space between cookies for expansion.

Most of my relatives loved that the cookies weren't too dry or too creamy enough to induce choking (in short, hindi "makatuk-an"). I reduced the sugar content as well for their palate. However, some still preferred no sugar coating but most of them liked it just the way it is.

In the news: $60,000 found in Garbage dump site

November 28,2008
Cebu City

A 16-year-old boy who makes ends meet by searching for treasures in other people's trash found a sack containing $60,000 USD! And the good thing about it is, after confirming that the bills were not fake, the boy knew how to share some of it to his fellow scavengers and even distributed rice to them.

$60,000 USD is around 3 Million pesos! It will truly be a MERRY Christmas for that lucky boy. (^^;)

Let's hope that it stays that way. An owner of a money-changing business has surfaced and is claiming ownership of the sack. Nobody can really be sure who owns it and for the boy to find it in the garbage means that it was probably discarded by the owners already.

Are you for sale?

In the news today, former speaker of the House Jose de Venecia Jr. said that everybody is for sale in the Philippines. He has been quoted in the Philippine Daily Inquirer as saying "Everybody is for sale in this country, even when we go to our districts, many of the citizenry are for sale. Their votes are for sale."

So are you for sale?

I certainly am not! And I think majority of the Filipinos are not as well. I may be inclined to do favors for acquaintances, friends, and family but my decisions will certainly not be based on who gives the greatest amount of bribe! The nerve to call everyone in this country for sale and call for a nationwide cleansing of souls! Where were you at the height of the scandal? And why have you surfaced only just now? If you really are for true cleansing, I challenge you to start with yourself and enumerate all the bribes you have received and initiated!

Marco Polo: Dark and White Chocolate Terrine

Dark and White Chocolate Terrine with Brandy snaps and Strawberry Coulis

Marco Polo Hotel - Davao City

This was served at Security Bank's Lower Tier 2 Subordinated Notes Presentation at Marco Polo Hotel Davao last Tuesday.  It was yummy, and the ice cream was so refreshing.  But if you ask me which one is the Terrine, which ones are the Brandy snaps and the Coulis, I can only guess but I really do not know for sure. hehehe (^o^)/ (Maybe you can help me out.)

The main course which was Grilled Chicken Skewer Topped with Spicy Peanut Sauce & served with Nasigoreng Rice was a favorite!  I even asked for my seatmates leftover skewer. hehehe (^o^)/

Davao Region Storm Signal no. 1

In my lifetime, I have never heard of the Davao region being affected by storms. Not until today that is, when the whole of Davao Region received a storm signal no. 1 because of Tropical Depression Tonyo. (Update: Tonyo is already slightly weakening as it enters Eastern Mindanao.)

I heard that the last time a storm affected the Davao Region was on October 1970.

What is a Signal no. 1?

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration's (PAGASA) website a storm signal no. 1 has the following attributes.

METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS:

  • A tropical cyclone will affect the locality.
  • Winds of 30-60 kph may be expected in at least 36 hours or intermittent rains may be expected within 36 hours. (When the tropical cyclone develops very close to the locality a shorter lead time of the occurrence of the winds will be specified in the warning bulletin.)
IMPACT OF THE WINDS:

  • Twigs and branches of small trees may be broken.
  • Some banana plants may be tilted or downed.
  • Some houses of very light materials (nipa and cogon) may be partially unroofed.
  • Unless this warning signal is upgraded during the entire existence of the tropical cyclone, only very light or no damage at all may be sustained by the exposed communities.
  • Rice crop, however, may suffer significant damage when it is in its flowering stage.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES:

  • When the tropical cyclone is strong or is intensifying and is moving closer, this signal may be upgraded to the next higher level.
  • The waves on coastal waters may gradually develop and become bigger and higher.
  • The people are advised to listen to the latest severe weather bulletin issued by PAGASA every six hours. In the meantime, business may be carried out as usual except when flood occur.
  • Disaster preparedness is activated to alert status.

The Philippines' Gossip Girl ?

Actually read this article from PDI about a college student running a blog about the girls in his campus a la Gossip Girl! In just a few months the site was able to rake in at least 31,000 views! I've been running this blog on and off for almost 2 years now and I'm not even close to that number!

Feel pretty? Someone's Watching You
Philippine Daily Inquirer
by: Sandie B. Gadia (Ateneo de Manila University)
October 18, 2008
MANILA, Philippines - Whether you are lining up for lunch in the cafeteria stall, or taking one of the school's many walkways, you might feel a pair of eyes zooming in on your every move. Surreptitiously, he takes note of not just your companions and your clothes, but even your smile, posture, laugh, or complexion.

A few days later, you find yourself suddenly the talk of the campus. An anonymous blogger writes about you in his infamous Blogspot account.

There's a growing fad in websites a la Gossip Girl. The GoodJobGod blog is one such site.  Now that you're in the spotlight, can you handle the attention and the bashing?

Garnering over 31,000 page views to date, what started as a summer vacation pastime is now a hit among Ateneans. The GoodJobGod blog has been controversial even if entries have been deleted for undisclosed reasons.
"I didn't really expect the blog to explode and take flight the way it did," says the blog's moderator who identifies himself as James. "I just really wanted a place where I can express what I really feel."
On the criteria for the choice of girls to feature, James says aside from the "obviously pretty" (those who pretty up and dress well), he also considers those who "may not be instant hits" but he finds beautiful nonetheless.
James adds, "I think confidence plays a huge role. If you carry yourself without self-doubt, that's good enough for me. Also, I think being true to yourself and comfortable in your own skin makes a pretty girl pretty." Showbiz personality and senior Literature-English major Nikki Gil has landed on the GoodJobGod blog. James writes, "[If] Nikki were to ride jeepneys (context is Gil's "Sakayan Ng Jeep" single released in 2005) all her life, I'd trade in my Honda Civic for a silver stallion for a good chance to give her a ride home everyday."
Aside from featuring models and actresses, James writes about average Janes too. In another entry, he writes about a sophomore Management Economics major, "Tennis anyone? With every forehand, she shows her grace. With every backhand, her elegance. Volley, her charm. Slice, her magnificence."
Every entry comes with a photo that James grabs from the girls' personal sites. He says he does not seek permission from the girls before he posts the photos and blog entries.

Girls react

Nella Lomotan, a sophomore Communications Technology Management major, was among those featured on the blog.
James writes about Nella: "Nella can shine bright with her beauty! This angel radiates with her gorgeousness every time. She has yet to fail me!"
Nella responds, "I never really saw myself the way [James] did. He may have exaggerated things a little bit."
"I guess the main disadvantage [of blogging anonymously] is that it's kind of embarrassing since I don't really have an idea as to who and how many [people] saw the entry," Nella says. "[I] wanted to bury myself alive the first time I saw [the entry about me]."
The entry has no lasting effects, at least for Nella. "I can't say it left an impact on me [because] truth be told, I never really cared about it," she says.  "I think there are so many other, more important things to be concerned about."
Compared to Nella, the blog's impact on Kryz Uy, a junior Communications Technology Management major, had been more palpable.
James writes on Kryz: "Like a holy chariot charging from the highest heavens, here comes the cutest most beautiful lady these eyes laid upon that day!"
"Initially, I felt as though the blogger had absolutely no respect for women," Kryz says. "It seemed like he was placing us on a shelf for other men to check out and comment on at their own pleasure!"  She adds that after much thought, however, she realized that if it's any consolation, James' blog entries weren't perverse or malicious.
The entry about her, she claims, made her more conscious of her privacy. "Before, I could dance around school and I couldn't care less what anyone thought about me," says Kryz, a member of the Company of Ateneo Dancers. "Now, I get embarrassed."
Nella and Kryz believe James means no harm. But they would prefer, however, that he not write about them. Nella says, "I'm not comfortable with the idea of someone I don't know writing stuff about me." Kryz agrees, "I hate that this whole thing has made me so conscious about what others think [about me]. I realized that people actually notice other people."

Not omnipresent

As if in reply, James wrote his readers a letter dated May 28. He said he is not an omnipresent being in the Ateneo campus. "I am a living, breathing, human person who can feel as much as you do."  He stressed, "I know what I'm doing, and my conscience is clear. This is a blog to appreciate beautiful women - If [one is] willing to share that with me, then [he] will always be welcome. I am not forcing [him] to read, much less like what I write in my blog."
The blog is now bare save for a single entry. "23k hits at last!" writes James. "I won the bet! You know who you are and you owe me big time! Kala mo hindi ko kaya 'no (You thought I couldn't make it)?"  Now readers ask, was the blog just a bet? Or a psychological experiment, as rumor has it?
James stays in control, leaving readers hanging, wondering what James has in store.

On Good Food and Cooking

In response to the question "Why is it important to learn how to cook?", I came up with the response below.

It is important to learn how to cook because there is nothing like good food to start or end your day with, whether you be alone or in the company of family and friends. If time can heal all wounds, good food patches all those wounds until they're healed.

Any comments? ^^

Recipe: Super Fudgy Brownies

Finally, a Brownies recipe I can be proud of! Prepared this one for my guakong's death anniversary. There must have been divine intervention as I've never perfected this recipe before with my brownies turning out at one time too cake-like, or chokingly moist, or sometimes even burnt. My uncles, aunties, and cousins loved it. I hope the people you serve it to will feel happy when they eat it. (^o^)/

Super Fudgy Brownies

Ingredients:

8 tbspn unsalted butter (1 stick)
1 cup All purpose flour
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 tspn baking powder
1/2 tspn salt
8 ounces chocolate (semisweet or bittersweet) (around 227 grams)
1 cup (brown) Sugar
3 eggs
1 tbspn espresso powder

walnuts and chocolate squares (your own preference)

Procedure:
  1. Preheat oven to 350 F or 180 C. Grease line and grease 11" x 9" baking pan.
  2. Whisk dry ingredients: flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, and espresso powder. Set aside.
  3. In another bowl, melt butter and chocolate until smooth. Add sugar. Add eggs one at a time.
  4. Add flour mixture and mix until flour is no longer visible. Do not over mix. Add the flour in batches. Do not add everything in one pour.
  5. Fold in toppings (coarsely chopped walnuts and chocolate squares).
  6. Transfer to baking pan and bake until tester inserted in the middle comes out with a few moist crumbs attached to it. (Time will depend on the type of oven and baking pan you are using. For someone using a small oven like me, it will be approximately around 20 minutes. For large ovens, I think it will be around 50-60 minutes.)

Whew! I got it!

I got it! SP Jain is offering me a full scholarship for their GMBA (Global MBA) program! Classes will start on December 13 for the Dubai campus and December 16 for the Singapore Campus. Each student will study 6 months in each campus. As to where you will be assigned first will depend on the specialization that you choose. (^o^)/ I have opted for a specialization in Retail Marketing.

Happy as I am of being accepted, I had to turn down the offer. Although they didn't say it explicitly, I got the feeling that my parents want me here in Davao. My sister said that it was a waste of time. A friend said I have to reevaluate my priorities and that I just did. Somehow, going away for another year for my MBA feels like a postponement of my goals (although still quite vague at this time hehehe ^^). For now I'll have to contend myself with the so-so education I am getting from Ateneo de Davao University.

The good news is SP Jain is still looking for scholars! And they have asked me for referrals. If you are interested please email me by tomorrow, October 23, 2008, at sunjun(seven)(nine)@gmail.com. (^O^)/

-0-

SP Jain is offering a full tuition scholarship amounting to around $20,000 (USD). You'll only need to pay around $10,000 (USD) for lodging, visas, and books. Coming up with the $10,000 is still hard but SP Jain can arrange a financing scheme for you. They have asked me to pay only 50% as downpayment and then later pay the remaining balance upon graduation. They are confident that you will be able to pay them back because so far they have 100% placement with their graduates. Average salary offer for their graduates was at around $40,000 (USD). For more information, visit their site at www.spjain.org.

-0-

This would have been a good stepping stone for a career change for me but I'll have to pass it up for now. In the meantime, I am looking at applying for another scholarship which will just take 3 months and the program won't have to start until late next year.

Another SMILEstone

October 12 was guama's (grandma) birthday. It was a chance for me to bring a dish to offer to her and the rest of the family. Usually, the feast would involve staples like pancit (chinese noodles), lechon, stir-fry vegetables, siopao, and chinese lumpia. This time my mom and I decided to go against the usual and change the menu we bring. She still prepared her signature pancit but she used sotanghon (vermicelli) this time and added Ngo-kong soup (Soup no. 5) to her menu. I prepared Food for the Gods for dessert.

At the end of the feast, my dessert was wiped out! Everyone wanted to try it as this was my first time to bring any kind of food I prepared myself. I have a secret though on how to sell a dish so that it will be eaten clean during gatherings which I will share at the end of the post. Some of my relatives found it too sweet but generally, I think most liked it.

Other relatives may have thought the same as me and my mom as the usual siopao and chinese lumpia were not present this time! In replacement, a vegetarian macaroni dish and maja blanca was added to the menu. (^o^)/

This is another SMileStone for me here in Davao. Next, I look forward to preparing something for my guakong (grandpa) on his death anniversary on the 23rd. I'm thinking of bringing brownies this time but I haven't perfected the recipe yet. Hopefully, I'll be able to make it in time.

As for my secret, it's really simple. You'll be dumbfounded once you read about it. If you want people to finish off any dish you bring, the key is ... (drumrolls please) to make it appear really appetising and bring only a few amount so that people will be scrambling for it! hehehe (^o^)/ With the limited size of my oven, I can prepare only 16 bars at a time. Certainly not plenty enough for a family with the size like ours. (^0^)v

The Happiest Man Alive (Weddings in Cebu)

Have you heard the groom laugh out loud, creating echoes across the church, during his wedding day? I just did! Last October 5, friends M & M finally got married! I maybe exaggerating a bit with the echoes but you can look at the picture and see for yourself how happy the groom is. I was lucky enough to turn at the right moment with my cam and capture the moment. In the picture with the groom is his family, obviously, sharing the happiness in this wonderful and joyful moment. (^o^)/

Although the couple started out stealing "holding hands" moment underneath table tops, the couple now openly profess their love for each other. The groom professing just days before that this will be the greatest gift ever for his birthday which just happens to be the day before his wedding. And on the wedding reception, he surprised the bride with a song number! He's the happiest and most relaxed groom I've seen. I'm sure everyone in the reception felt their love for each other.

Congratulations M & M!

The ceremony was held at the Sacred Heart Parish in Cebu. The church is now fully airconditioned and comes with the floral arrangement. Reception followed at the Grand Convention Center.

Davao Great Finds: Yurushi Japanese Restaurant

Just when I was blogging about Tonkatsu (fried breaded pork) and how I've been longing for Japanese cuisine lately, comes a great find in the city of Davao! Yurushi, located at corner Suzao street and Uyanguren, is here to serve the Davaoeños affordable Japanese food! Now anyone can get Tonkatsu, Katsudon (Breaded porkchop topping), and Gyuudon (Beef strips topping) for only 57 pesos! Not only is the food affordable, but it actually tastes very authentic. Must be because it is personally prepared by their Japanese cook. I've tasted their Tonkatsu and Katsudon meals and I wasn't disappointed. This is truly a great find and I'm adding it to my list of great Davao City restaurants. (Good authentic food at an affordable price)

A problem you may have with the place is that it looks like a carinderia (local canteen). Despite being one, the place is really clean and well maintained. If you go upstairs, you'll be surprised to know that the place is airconditioned and even has a coin operated karaoke machine that the whole gang can enjoy! So start saving up those 5 peso coins so you can sing your hearts out! (I haven't checked out the comfort rooms (toilet) yet.)

A funny thing I noticed is the name. Yurushi in English actually means "forgiveness." I wonder why they named it that way. My guess is it's suppose to be Yoroshii which means "good" but with the native slang, with the not so flexible tongue, made the name sound like how it is spelled now. (The next time I'm there I'll try to muster enough courage to ask the owners and maybe even practice my Japanese. (^^;))

This restaurant is truly a great find, perfect for our after (MBA) class meals. The next time you find yourself craving to try something new, head to this restaurant, try their Tonkatsu or Katsudon and feel like a winner.

They also have Chahan (Japanese style fried rice) in their menu. Fresh fruit shakes, like Mango, are priced at 14 pesos for 8 ounce servings. Softdrinks (8 oz., served in bottles) are priced at 13 pesos each.
(WINNER Tonkatsu meal with cabbage salad topped with Japanese style mayonnaise)

Rice Forum @ Waterfront Hotel Cebu

I was back in Cebu over the weekend. First reason was to attend a "rice forum" as mama coined it. The president of the grains retailers association in Davao invited her to attend the forum. She thought that they would be forming a new association in Cebu to strengthen bonds so that complaints will have more weight in the eyes of government. I thought it would be fun to meet possible business contacts from Cebu and so I obliged. Straight from the airport, I went to attend the forum last Saturday, Oct. 5, 2008. When I reached the venue, to my surprise, the "rice forum" turned out to be the "Philippine Grains Stakeholders Consultative Forum!" Imagine my surprise as Department of Agriculture secretary Arthur Yap, Cebu's Vice mayor Rama, and National Food Authority (NFA) directors nationwide were present in the forum! To make matters worst, I had no intention of paying the 3,500 pesos registration fee! I was sent only to listen to the forum and not really participate in the discussion and partake in the meals. Luckily, the registration booth was inefficient and I was able to sneak in without paying hehehe (^o^)/

I was able to listen to the concerns of the farmers, millers, traders, retailers, and the consumers. The NFA was there to present their past and future projects as well. Nothing new was really presented in the forum and I could not believe that a ballroom session was scheduled to be part of the program. I guess it really was more of a socialization event rather than a consultation forum.

I really didn't get anything out of the forum but I was happy to see a familiar face in the crowd. A friend I knew back when I was still working in Cebu who is now thinking of running his own seeding farm. He was there only to observe as well but he passed by the registration booth which required him to pay. In exchange, he got a green envelope with a green T-shirt inside both printed with the forum's title. hihihi (^o^)v

Corporate Social Responsibility (Project 10 to the 100th)

Corporate Social Responsibility has gained popularity in the recent years and companies are learning to be more socially responsible and are now giving back to the communities. In this light, Google has launched its project called Project 10 to the 100th. Google is asking everyone for great ideas that can change the world and help as many people as possible. They are committing $10 million to this project. So you have an idea that can change the community or country you are in, but lack the funding to implement the project, this might be the right opportunity for you. Visit the site (http://www.project10tothe100.com/index.html) for more details. Deadline for submission of ideas is on October 20, 2008.

If you know of friends who are into social services like Habitat for Humanities and Gawad Kalinga, you might want to inform them so that they can enter in this project. Selection of the best ideas will be done through online voting so we definitely stand a chance! The project's tag line says it all "May Those Who Help the Most Win!" Calling my friends E and N in Cebu!!! (Voting will commence on Januray 27th.)

A friend once said that giving back through company promotions like this one doesn't really impress him because the company gains recognition as well through the promotions. And Google doesn't hide this fact. In their site Google wrote that they chose this project because they believe that "the only thing that increases individual happiness over time is helping other people. In other words, helping helps everybody, helper and helped alike." Google realizes that by helping others they are being "helped" as well. And personally, I don't mind that Google benefits from this promotion as well, what counts more is that they are doing something to HELP! That for me is more than enough.

Quotes from Lunch Queen

I haven't gotten over the series "Lunch Queen." Here are some quotes I got from the series that I know you'll love!

"Koi wa ii mon nan da yo. Koi suru to, shigoto mo ganbarou to omou shi, amari muzukashiku kangaenaide tanoshimeba ii."

which I translated to

"Love is a good thing. When you fall in love, you feel inspired to do a lot of things like doing good at work. You shouldn't think too much about it, instead it would be better if you just enjoy it."

"Namida to tomo ni tabeta hito denakereba, jinsei no aji ga wakaranai." - Goethe

which they translated in english as

"If you've never eaten while crying, you don't know what life tastes like."

This was actually the theme of the movie. I searched for the saying from Goethe in english but couldn't find the exact lines. I think they may have gotten it from his poem "Who never eat with tears his bread."

Investing 101: Pay Yourself First

Pay Yourself First

Most people would pay everyone else before paying themselves.  At the end of the month, they hope that some money will be left over to put towards savings and investments.  However, this rarely happens.  Paying yourself first means putting a percentage of your paycheck into savings or investments the moment you receive it and before you start paying bills, going grocery shopping, filling your gas tank, etc.  If you do this, you will never go a month without saving money!  At the end of the month, you will probably spend all your money, but the savings will already be safe in the bank.

Never Put Too Much Trust in Friends, Learn How to Use Enemies (Laws of Power)

This series will focus on my interpretation of the 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene. Not so much because I want power but more so because I want to change my attitude and character so as not to offend anyone. At the same time, I think this can be a good reference in figuring out the personalities of people around me and figuring out whom among them is trying to manipulate me. (^o^)/

Law #2 Never Put Too Much Trust in Friends, Learn How to Use Enemies

The law says that friends are quicker to betray you because they are easily aroused to envy. And that hiring a former enemy is better because he will be more loyal than a friend, because he has more to prove.

Strangely though, it is your kindness towards your friend that unbalances everything. You either favor your friends too much and destroy the distance required in working situations or sometimes the favor in itself becomes oppressive for your friends whom may feel that their good fortune was brought about by the friendship and not because of the things they did to deserve it.
It is true that friends can be ungrateful sometimes and their ingratitude can really hurt us more because it is unexpected and thus catching us unprepared. But a friend once said that there are those friends who also are like family already.

The key to power, then, is the ability to judge who is best able to further your interests in all situations.

My Own Restaurant

Owning a restaurant of my own is definitely on my bucket list. And the vision that I want for my restaurant was beautifully portrayed in the Japanese drama series "Lunch Queen." Although making a profit is part of any business, I do not want my restaurant to be profit-oriented. My vision would be concentrated on making good food that can bring a smile to any diner, uplift their spirit, and even bring back good old memories. Knowing that people would actually look forward to eating in my restaurant and overhearing diners praising the food will be more than enough reward for me. It will be my way of repaying the culinary world for all the good food I have tasted and the joy it brought in my life. (Like yesterday I got treated to a sumptuous meal of Angus beef T-bone steak with Au Jus sauce and tonight I tasted my first Wagyuu beef yakiniku style.)

Going back to my experience in Japan, I remember longing for that Tonkatsu (breaded pork loin) set meal from a restaurant by the bus station near the office. Whenever I feel down and I feel the need to energize, I knew I can always count on that restaurant to lift my spirits up with their excellent Tonkatsu set meal. I loved my Tonkatsu served with a dash of mustard and lots of Tonkatsu sauce to go with it. I also remember loving Tonkatsu with curry that even until now I crave for it. So occassionaly I would go to Rai-Rai Ken just to order Tonkatsu curry. It's the only place in Cebu and Davao that I could find Japanese curry on the menu. In Manila, I remember ordering the same meal in UCC Cafe at the Mall of Asia. The one in UCC tasted closer to the ones I had in Japan but both restaurants serve excellent Japanese-style curry.

It so happens that the word "katsu" in Japanese also means "to win." With a play of words (which is another Japanese thing that I really love), one can then say "Katsu o tabete, jinsei ni katsu," to mean "Eat katsu and win in life!" How cool is that?! And it is exactly what I want my food to be - food that makes you feel like a winner!

In order to make my dream restaurant, I can either avail of a cash advance loan or take the offer of my uncle who wants to partner with me. However, I feel that now is not yet the right time. Hopefully in 3 to 5 years time. (^o^)/

Papa's 1st and 70th Birthday!

Last sunday, September 29, we celebrated Papa's FIRST and 70th birthday!

In my almost 30 years of existence, this is the only time I remember celebrating Papa's birthday. I do remember my sister sending a birthday cake for papa on a fictional birth date I saw in his passport. This time around though, earlier this year, I was finally able to coerce him into saying his actual birthday based on the chinese (lunar) calendar. And our aunts and uncles, his siblings, confirmed his age.

Surprisingly though, when your birthday is based on the lunar calendar, there are years where in your day might just be skipped! That's what happened to my dad's birthday this year so we had to contend with celebrating it a day earlier. Hopefully next year we can celebrate it on the actual date itself. (^o^)v Already looking forward to it.

Wow! Papa is already 70. I can't believe it.

Although i didn't notice it at all during the time we shot this picture but is that just sweat in his eyes or do I see tears? I hope papa is happy. (^o^)/

Lunch Time!

"Ranchi wa watashitachi no kibou desu (Lunch is our hope)" says Natsumi Mugita, the lead character in the J-Drama series "Lunch Queen." She was referring to the fact that it's the only time of the day where in part-timers like her can enjoy a complete meal below 1000 yen. She was also referring to how a delicious lunch can make her whole day better. She looks forward to eating lunch and works hard just so she can have a good lunch.

I too have experienced looking forward to lunch. When I was still working, lunch time meant socializing time. I was free to talk to my colleagues without feeling guilty of being a disturbance. And they, in turn, were much more receptive during lunch time as well, especially the Japanese. Back in Japan, I even befriended the restaurant owners who were bringing our lunches (obentou) to work everyday. I was free to loiter in the atrium without having to mind the watchful eyes of bosses. And most of all, it was freedom from my workstation, during those days when work just gets really boring and you have exhausted all means of entertainment already.

How about you? Have you ever looked forward to lunch time as well?

Now that my time is unregulated and I can do whatever I want whenever I want, I somehow miss longing for those times, waiting for the clock and eventually hearing the sound of the bell to signify the start of the break. Somehow, life is easier when you have milestones (SMILEstones) even as insignificant as break time to look forward to. (^o^)/

Lunch @ Kitchen Macaroni

"Where is Kitchen Macaroni?" you might wonder. It actually sounds weird for a restaurant name. Well, maybe here in the Philippines but in Japan, western-style restaurants have funny names like this one.

Over the weekend, I watched the J-Drama series "Lunch Queen" or "ランチの女王" in Japanese. I truly enjoyed the series. It made me realize how much I miss watching J-Dramas. Unlike Philippine and Korean telenovelas, J-Dramas only last for around 11 to 12 episodes which is just enough for a quarter of a year. As a result, stories develop faster and writers are forced to focus on a single theme. Just like this series which focuses on Natsumi, the main character, whom by extraordinary circumstances gets involved with a family of 5 men running a western style restaurant. And not only were the writers successful in injecting seriousness and drama in the episodes but they did a good job of injecting humor as well. Japanese humor is actually one which I can relate to unlike American humor which is sometimes hard to understand.

Another reason why I like watching J-Dramas is because mostly these dramas show a different side of Japanese society. Through the series you get a glimpse of how Japanese people really are despite experiencing something totally quite the opposite in real society. Somehow bottled thoughts, emotions, and ideals are reflected in these dramas. And in every series I've watched, there is a strong sense of idealism towards society and the world in general that just never fails to attract me.

My sister actually saw the series first and suggested we open a restaurant similar to Kitchen Macaroni. After watching the series, I fell in love with the restaurant myself and it would be a dream come true to be able to open a similar one just like that of Kitchen Macaroni. (More on this in my following post.)

Never Outshine the Master (Laws of Power)

This series will focus on my interpretation of the 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene. Not so much because I want power but more so because I want to change my attitude and character so as not to offend anyone. At the same time, I think this can be a good reference in figuring out the personalities of people around me and figuring out whom among them is trying to manipulate me. (^o^)/

Rule #1: Never Outshine the Master

Those in high standing want to feel like kings and queens: They want to feel secure and superior to those around them whether it be in terms of intelligence, wit, or charm. It is a misperception (I personally fall victim to this) to believe that by flaunting your gifts and talents, you are winning their affection. In fact, instead of winning their affection, you might be making them feel the opposite - instilling fear and insecurity. They become insecure of their positions and fearful that you might replace them someday.

"Make your masters appear more brilliant than they are and you will attain the heights of power."

You may think that these rules of power may only be applied in the work setting, but truly, they are universal and can be applied everywhere. These can even be applied to the family setting as well. Personally, I believe I would be able to handle situations with my mom better if I apply these rules. (^o^)v

Sometimes I am tempted to ride along and flaunt whatever I have, especially when faced with braggarts or people I cannot get along with. Now I know better. Staying humble and meek and maintaining a low-profile might work to my advantage in the long run. In order to accomplish this, I think feeling secure about oneself is key as well. If you are secure of yourself, you are less likely to retaliate in the advances and insecurities of others.

Investing 101: Time Value of Money

This series will present fundamental principles everyone, especially the young, should know when it comes to personal finance.
The Time Value of Money

Money received and invested today is not the same value as that of money, with the same face value, received in the future.

Most would think that a hundred pesos received today is the same as that of a hundred pesos to be received next year.  This assumption is wrong simply because of all the ways you can make the money grow during  that gap.  Just by putting the 100 pesos you received today in a savings account, you'll at least earn interest on it, thereby increasing its future value.

Here's a simple formula to determine the future value of funds compounded annually given a specific interest rate:

FV = Future Value
PV = Present Value
i = interest rate
n = number of years

Example:
If I have 69,500 pesos and I allow it to compound for 31 years at an annual interest of 9% per annum, the future value of my money would be

FV = 69,500 (1+.09)^31
FV = 1,005,092 pesos! (A million pesos!)

My Home Garden

When I stayed in Japan, I realized that I love being outdoors, enjoying nature and enjoying the sun. I miss going driving by the mountains during autumn and enjoying the picnics with friends at parks. The hanami picnics will have to be the best. That's the time when Japan's national flower, the sakura, blossoms for just a couple of weeks at the start of spring.

If I were to build my dream house, it would definitely have a majestic garden. It's an extra expense I know, but nothing really beats waking up to the serene view it offers and walking around it to enjoy the cool and fresh air. My garden would be Zen inspired. It will have Japanese looking tress, maybe even bonsai trees, a small wooden bridge (or a pathway made out of wooden planks will do), and maybe a meditation garden as well, just like the one shown in the picture above. (The picture by the way, is that of Ryouanji, the meditation rock garden in Kyoto.)

I'm also planning to build garden buildings in the middle of my Zen garden. The buildings' walls will be made out of glass so that one can enjoy the view of the garden from the inside. The place would be great for lazing around during weekends, reading books, enjoying dinner with family, or maybe even for throwing parties with family and friends. I'm thinking the experience would be exhilarating. It would be like enjoying dinner in an exclusive restaurant reserved for the night just for you and your family and friends. And best of all, nobody has to eat hurriedly and everyone can enjoy a nice conversation over sake, beer, wine, or water, whichever you prefer.

I remember one of my uncles saying that somehow food tastes better when being enjoyed outdoors, just like when you are at the beach with friends eating grilled food with your bare hands.

It so happens that here in Davao, we live in a subdivision that's not overcrowded and the air is still fresh because of all the trees surrounding us. It is very near downtown Davao but the place is still very peaceful and quiet. It looks like my dream house and garden is not that far from becoming a reality after all.

Knick Knacks!

I simply love these fish-shaped biscuits coated with chocolate here in the Philippines. This has got to be on my list of local favorites, along with Chocnut and Curly tops! The other two are purely chocolates so Knick Knacks has the edge because it can be classified under biscuits. And most of all, these local delights are not that heavy on the budget, so you can enjoy them any time. And now, it comes fortified with Vitamin A and iron as well.

I hope these don't have Melamine on them. I would be devastated if they are taken out of the market.

I can't believe that these Chinese milk manufacturers would actually add a harmful component like Melamine into their formula just so they can boost their product's protein content results.

(Looking at the packaging of Knick Knacks, it appears that the original formula actually comes from Switzerland and the product is just locally manufactured by a licensee.)

Waiting for God's Will

"Waiting for God's will" is how one guy in this chat room put it. I'm glad he isn't idly waiting by and expecting God to send his special someone gift-wrapped while he sulks and waits in his living room. It would be foolish to expect for that someone to come by if you are not doing anything to meet him/her.

If you're looking for a place to meet Christian Men and Women, check out the link. It's an active dating community that promises to have many people in your neighborhood. "Jesus, It's that Easy!" is how another member put it referring to how easy it ease to meet other people through this site.

Mama Diaries: Mom and the Washing Machine

Mama enters the house tired and downhearted. She just came from hanging the laundry out in the garden. She opens up and says "The washing machine got BURNT", she said in the vernacular. Believe me, those were her exact words. I was eating breakfast and trying to ignore her but I couldn't help but react on how a washing machine can flame up and burn down to the ground. Knowing her, I knew she meant something else, of course. She then goes on to explain that while washing the laundry, the washing machine suddenly stopped spinning and that she smelled smoke coming from it. It seems like the washing machine has over heated.

She then enumerates the possible causes of why this could have happened. First on the list were my dry fit shirts! She said that they were too silky, not allowing any friction, jamming the spinning mechanism in the machine. Next, were my socks! Being small in size, she speculates that my socks somehow found a way to enter the machine and jam it. Next, probably the most feasible one, she said that she might have put too much load on it.

Not agreeing with her first two theories and disinterested in a follow up conversation I continue with eating my breakfast and sipping my freshly made juice. As if remembering her own share of fresh juice, she goes to the refrigerator to get hers. She then comes back and inquire why the refrigerator's light wouldn't turn on. I said calmly, "brown out (black out)."

The angel of enlightenment swiftly flies pass us, leaving a trace of laughter in the air. "Why didn't you say so in the first place!" mama quickly quips, as if she had already asked.

It turns out there was nothing wrong with the washing machine. It was the black out that caused the machine to stop.

Now I'm wondering how I should equate a machine getting burnt with that of a black out. In any case, knowing about the black out seemed to have lifted mama's spirit, probably thinking that she may not have to replace the washing machine after all. (^O^)/
