Lucky or Unlucky Vincent

Vincent is the only male in the house.  He lives with 5 women.  Is he lucky?

First time to go to Manila Ocean Park.  Too bad I didn't have time to explore the Oceanarium.  But I did have time to watch the Sea Lion Show!  Worth a 150 pesos for 20 minutes of fun.  Watch these sea lions dance to the tune of K-POP group 2ne1's Fire!  Watch this video!  You'll love it.

Be honest, did you look at the sea lions or were your eyes transfixed on the trainers?  hahaha.  Felt really bad for the other trainer.  He doesn't seem to have any rhythm in his body.  Vincent is the sea lion on the left (in the video), by the way.  He's the only male sea lion in a group of 6 at the Manila Ocean Park.

Lucky Vincent gets to kiss this lovely foreigner.  Want a photo op with Vincent? No.  Want a photo op with this girl? Yes! Too bad the organizers only allowed for Vincent's.

We also had time to go see the majestic Jelly Fishes.  A certified crowd pleaser in any aquarium in the world.  Just felt that the containers could have been a little cleaner.  And as one of my friends commented, the interior design seems to have been designed to resemble a pub/bar.  I'm still undecided whether to love or hate its double purpose.  I guess it's okay as long as smoking will not be allowed.

The bar-like room is not this room but the one before this. ^^ Too bad, forgot to take a picture of it.

Thank you for great company and the very appetizing dinner afterwards!

Breakfast Dilemma

I experienced a big dilemma back at the breakfast table in our hotel in India.  No, it wasn't that the food wasn't great.  Actually, I loved the food.  No, it wasn't that the service was poor.  Actually, the service was great as well.  In fact, it was very personal.  You can even request the waiters to get the food and deliver it to your table.  And it wasn't the coffee as well.  I also enjoyed their freshly brewed coffee.  Of all things, you'd never guessed what it is.  It's this Strawberry Jam!

Damn! I was so conflicted whether to try and eat this strawberry jam or not.  I bet it would have paired really well with the Danish breads or even just a simple toasted American bread.  Do you have any idea why I was so conflicted? Any guesses?

In the end, I never got to try it.  All I have is this souvenir photo of it.  I guess the environmentalist in me won over.  The jam was labeled as "strawberry CONSERVE!"  Bazinga! Don't you ever try eating me!  (^o^)/

We stayed, by the way, at the CLARION COLLECTION HOTEL QUTUB.

The Chocolate Buffet Experience

If there's one thing I wouldn't want to live without in this world, no doubt, it would be CHOCOLATE!  I've been munching on chocolates ever since I can remember to the point that now when I eat too much, my nose bleeds.  I call it my body's allergic reaction to chocolates.  It's how my body warns me that I've had too much already.  It's a sad thing to have but I'm still thankful that my body still allows me to have this guilty pleasure unlike other known allergies there is.

And so when I heard that we were staying in The Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore, browsing their site revealed that one can have the ultimate chocolate experience at THE CHOCOLATE BAR.  A restaurant at the top of Marina Bay Sands offering a buffet spread of 57 chocolate-themed desserts!  Right away, we put that on our To-Do list.  Just thinking about it already takes my imagination to heavenly places.  I thought after this experience, my life would be semi-complete and I can readily die. Might have exaggerated a bit there, and literally, after trying out the buffet, I really felt like dying!

Here's what I would recommend you try in the buffet spread.

Chocolate Fondant
This cake is better known as the Lava Cake in our side of the globe.  Warm chocolate oozes out from the center of the cake making this dessert rich, creamy, and extra special.

Cheesecake Lollipops
Creamy Cheesecake filling covered with White Chocolate on a stick! Attractively sweet and playful.

Ganache
67% Chocolate with Sauternes French Dessert Wine and
72% Chocolate with Cockburn Port Wine
Dark chocolate with a burst of fragrant dessert wines perfect for dark chocolate lovers.

Steamed Chocolate "Creme" Banana Chutney
Chocolate steamed with banana leaves and paired with Banana chutney.  A great way to start your buffet experience because the chocolate is quite light and Bananas always go well with chocolate.

Rosemary Milk Chocolate Cappuccino
Rosemary infused foam layered with a rich milk chocolate mousse.  Something unique to try as recommended by their website.  I would prefer it to be served warm.

French Macarons (Macaroons)!
Crunchy bite-size pieces with just the right amount of sweetness and available in three different unique flavors! (Balsamic Macaroons, Pear-Walnut Macaroons,  and Elderflower Macaroons)

Chocolate Fondue
It would be a sin to miss this section!  Candied nuts and fruits with a rich chocolate dipping sauce.  Never fails to impress.

Chocolate Covered Nuts
Simply yummy!  White chocolate pistachios, Orange Dark Chocolate Macadamias, Dark Chocolate Almonds, and Milk Chocolate peanuts!  I wanted to take home a bag of these goodies!

Chocolate Pistachio and Cherries

After Eight
Light chocolate mousse infused with Mint!  One of my favorite combinations.

Out of the 57 creations, I was able to try 22!  Not bad, right?  I wouldn't recommend that you follow my footsteps though.  I just realized that chocolate is not meant to be eaten this way.  A good chocolate is best eaten slowly and in small quantities.  It needs to be SAVORED and not DEVOURED.  Hahaha (^o^)v  I literally almost died that night.  I had to sleep propped up to prevent myself from throwing up.

When you get your chance on a chocolate buffet experience, just choose the best 5 to 10 creations that you would like to try.  Ask the crew for the bestsellers and for those items that are not on display like the Chocolate Fondant and Ice Cream.  Forgo overly inspired creations like chocolates with Tomato, Black pepper, and Green Tea.  They are likely not to taste that great.  Try only one and save the rest for your next visit.  Forgo under inspired creations like Donuts, cookies, and Chocolate Hazelnut spreads.  Do try your childhood favorites like chocolate covered nuts and marshmallows!

The staff said that they use only the finest chocolate available - Valhrona from France.  It's a good thing also that the restaurant doesn't have a No Leftover Policy.  You can try the creations and just leave them if you don't like the taste.  However, let's not be wasteful please.  Just get and try what you can finish.  Policy or no policy, leftovers are always discouraged.

I can understand the feeling to make "SULIT" the buffet experience.  That's very Filipino.  Instead of eating until you die, why not bring a zip lock bag instead and shove in those chocolate covered nuts from time to time. hahaha (^o^)v  Just jokingly recommending this of course.  Like I said, I wanted to take these goodies home!

Another good thing about the Chocolate Bar is that it's located at the SKY PARK.  Aside from the rich and indulgent treats, you also get treated to the wonderful Marina Bay area skyline.

THE CHOCOLATE BAR
The Club at Marina Bay Sands, Sands Sky Park (Tower 2)
38 SGD++ per person
Available from 8pm onwards.

Always remember that anything in excess is not a good thing! Take your time and SAVOR good chocolate just like how you'd like to go through your own LIFE.

Dankeschön

"Dankeschön" is how you say "Thank you" in German.  Ich Danke Ihnen (I thank you), the people on this list for making life more colorful!

Thank you Sally for taking care of my sister and I every time I'm in Manila.  Great home cooking as always!  If you guys are wondering what the Calamansi are for - It's this new health regimen that's suppose to make your body alkaline therefore killing germs and bacteria that can make you sick!  Not to mention the vitamins you get from drinking the juice.  Just take the juice (with as much pulp as possible) of around 20 Calamansi first thing in the morning and then try not to drink or eat anything for the next hour.  Don't mix it with anything, even water, as that will make it acidic!  Credit also goes to a few friends and Bo Sanchez for introducing this regimen.

Thank you Travel Factor for providing me the opportunity to go to Donsol, Sorsogon on a budget even on my own.  Service can still be improved but overall I'm very grateful.  And thank you to great company (Patrick, Flora, CJ, Tiff, Char, Brenda, CB, Mina, Iko, Frances, and Dan) for the fun and interesting conversations and parties (which I mostly missed ;-)).

Thank you to our boat captain and the vice-chairman of that place in Donsol for the warm welcome and the free FRESH BUKO while waiting for the fireflies to do their thing.  Thank you Tissiana, Paula, and Leo for making that boat ride a bit more interesting that it normally would be.  Hope you guys enjoy the rest of your Dive trips here in the Philippines.  And in general, thank you to the people of Donsol for the welcoming SMILES from morning 'til night.

How Good People Turn Evil

"... corrupt people don't think they are corrupt.  Just like evil people don't think they're evil."

"The more you say NO, the easier it becomes.  The more you do the right thing, the harder it is to do the wrong thing."

"Evil is knowing better but doing worse." - Philip Zimbardo

Earthquake and Tsunami Preparedness and Safety Guide

In line with recent events,  I am posting the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology's (PHIVOCS) Earthquake and Tsunami Preparedness and Safety Guides.  These were designed to be pocket-size.  You can have them printed to carry around with you or give away to your love ones.  Or you can also forward or email the link to this post to inform your friends and family who have internet access.  Let us all be prepared.

EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS GUIDE

BEFORE AN EARTHQUAKE OCCURS

- Know the earthquake hazards in your area.
- Follow structural design and engineering practices when constructing a house or building.
- Evaluate the structural soundness of the buildings and the houses; strengthen if necessary.
- Strap or bolt heavy furnitures/cabinets to the walls.
- Check the stability of hanging objects like ceiling fans and chandeliers.
- Breakable items, harmful chemicals and flammable materials should be stored properly in the lowermost secured shelves.
- Familiarize yourself with the EXIT routes.
- Know where fire extinguishers, first aid kits, alarms, and communication facilities are located.  Learn how to use them beforehand.
- Prepare a handy emergency supply kit with first aid kit, canned food and can opener, water, clothing, blanket, battery-operated radio, flashlights and extra batteries.
- Conduct and Participate in regular earthquake drills.

DURING AN EARTHQUAKE

- STAY CALM.
- When you are INSIDE a structurally sound building or home ... STAY THERE!
- If possible, quickly open the door for the exit.
- Duck under a sturdy desk or table, and hold on to it, or protect your head with your arms.
- Stay away from glass windows, shelves, cabinets and other heavy objects.
- Beware of falling objects.  Be alert and keep your eyes open.
- If you're OUTSIDE ... move to an open area!
- Stay away from trees, power lines, posts, and concrete structures.
- Move away from steep slopes which may be affected by landslides.
- If you're near the shore and fell an earthquake, especially if it's too strong, move quickly to higher grounds.  Tsunamis might follow.
- If you're in a moving vehicle, STOP and get out!  Do not attempt to cross bridges, overpasses, or flyovers which may have been damaged.

AFTER AN EARTHQUAKE

- Be prepared for aftershocks.  Once the shaking stops, take the fastest and safest way out of the building.
- Don't use elevators.
- Don't enter damaged buildings.
- Don't use telephone unless necessary.
- Don't PANIC.
- Check yourself and others for injuries.
- Check water and electrical lines for damages.
- Check for spills of chemical, toxic, and flammable materials.
- Check and control fires which may spread.
- If you need to leave your residence, leave a message stating where you are going and bring your emergency supply kit.
- Keep updated on disaster prevention instructions.

TSUNAMI PREPAREDNESS AND SAFETY

- Do not stay in low-lying coastal areas after a strong earthquake.  Move to higher grounds immediately.
- Never go down the beach to watch for a tsunami.  When you can see the wave, you are too close to escape it.
- During the retreat of sea level, interesting sights are often revealed.  Fishes may be stranded on dry land thereby attracting people to collect them.  Also, sandbars and coral flats may be exposed.  These scenes tempt people to flock to the shoreline thereby increasing the number of people at risk.
- Stay out of danger areas until an "all clear" is issued by competent authority.  A tsunami is not a single wave but a series of waves!

Visit the PHIVOLCS site for more information.  You can download the Earthquake Preparedness Guide here and the Tsunami Preparedness and Safety Guide here.

Be prepared and stay safe everyone!

Incredible India!

Oh India! My India!

How do I begin to describe you?  I guess it's undeniable that one must address the issue of smell first.  When I was presenting my passport to the immigration officer here in the Phils., I was caught off guard when the officer asked me if I brought a face mask with me.  The first thought on my mind was to ask why and I tried recalling whether India was affected by Bird Flu.  But I didn't have to probe my memory any further as the officer offered the answer right away quipping that I may need it to protect myself from the terrible odor.

It is not uncommon that when Filipinos think of India they right away associate it with dirty surroundings and the horrible smell.  A lot actually don't want to go visit the place mainly because of these 2 factors.  As for the dirty surroundings, all I can say is, like any other country where poverty is prevalent, there are bound to be slum areas.  While as for the smell, I think it's a matter of personal hygiene!  I actually have more than a couple of Indian friends now and I've never smelled anything offensive.  In fact, on our recent visit to India, everyone smelled great.  Expect, of course, for some people in the plane who have probably been travelling for days already and for some people who have been walking and lining up all day in hot weather in Taj Mahal.  Those are actually very understandable.  It can happen to anyone of us.  In fact, the more prevailing scents are the aromatic scents of spices.  Understandably also, if you are not also used to smelling these then it can be offensive.

Being a proud Filipino, the best compliment I can probably give to India is that almost everything there, both good and bad, is ten times more than what we have here in the Philippines.  And aside from the marvelous structures, what truly makes India incredible are the people!  Just see for yourself!

Poverty is ten times more than in the Philippines.  Squatters and slum areas are prevalent in the city and can be readily seen just by passing along the highways.

There are also a lot of beggars.  This kid has taken begging another notch by becoming a street performer - dressed like a travelling gypsy, he does acrobatic tricks hoping to receive some money in return.

Traffic is also 10 times worst than in manila.  Bicycles, rickshaws (bicycle-drawn carriages), auto rickshaws (motor-drawn carriages), and horse-drawn carriages are allowed on almost all roads (even on some major roads).  Drivers seldom give way.  I bet Manila drivers will even have a hard time driving in this city.

FOOD is ten times more colorful, ten times more flavorful, and ten times more aromatic!  I know that Indian food takes a little getting used to and it's not for all.  But once you learn to appreciate the flavors, it can really be mind-blowing as well.  That's why in every major city, you're likely to find a restaurant serving Indian food. One of the people we met in India actually said that when she and her family went to Estonia, they saw an Indian restaurant in the city.  My companion who's not so fond of Indian food, actually found the food we ate at The Great Kebab Factory very palatable with no overpowering flavors.  Friends whom I've shared a pack of Bhujia also found it very delicious ^^

In addition, I'd say that Indian Food is ten times more HEALTHY as well!  Mostly veggies and not fatty at all!

While Filipinos are known for their hospitality, I bet Indian's are known for it as well.  Not only did our hosts treat us very well but a total stranger, who doesn't work at the airport but who happens to be just there while we were searching for the hotel service, was very kind to help us call the hotel and look for the one assigned to pick us up.

Indians also have the same happy and hopeful smiles you get regularly from Filipinos!

Unlike most Chinese people in China, Indians know how to line up!

Religion is definitely ten times more extreme  And Indians are probably ten times more spiritual as well.  An individual's upbringing definitely shapes how a person turns out to be when he grows up.  And religion is a big part of that upbringing.  I believe Indians are the way they are because of their culture and beliefs.

A major part of their belief is to respect all living creatures.  That's why it's not unusual to see cows, pigeons, squirrels, peacocks, and monkeys freely roaming in the gardens and parks.  A particular religion called Jainism even discourages their members from eating root crops like carrots and potatoes because they believe that these vegetables are "killed" in the process before they reach the end of their life cycle.

Unfortunately, authority seems to be ten times more lax as well.  And people are as equally defiant of not-so-harmful rules. After all, laying, running, and playing on the lawn is not the same as "walking" on it as the sign suggests.  hehehe (^0^)/  Security at the mosques and mausoleums were very strict though.

Their clothes are definitely ten times more COLORFUL!  Even the bath robe in the hotel is in bright RED!

They are also equally, if not more, expressive as Filipinos!  Add to that their love for music, singing, and dancing!  I'd have to say that Indians have ten times more appreciation for local entertainment - movies, music, songs, and dances!  I haven't yet seem a Bollywood film where in the actors didn't break out into a song and dance number!

The TAJ MAHAL (Agra, India)

Ancient structures are ten times more grand and beautiful!  I learned that entrances to mausoleums (Taj Mahal and Humayun's Tomb) were built so that when we enter, our field of vision is treated to a scenic representation of what "paradise" is like as described in the Koran.  If you have a kit lens with a field of vision of around 30mm-50mm, this would mean that you can fit the whole thing in one frame, a frame supposedly depicting paradise.

Humayun's Tomb (New Delhi, India)

The RED FORT (Agra, India)

The PRESIDENT'S HOUSE (New Delhi, India)

I'd like to end with one Indian practice that I myself admittedly is not used to and probably will not be anytime soon.  The picture on the side is a picture of Golgappas, an Indian street food which is made of fried hollow doughs filled with chickpeas and spicy potatoes and drizzled with Tamarind and Yogurt sauce.  It's absolutely delicious and I can understand why it's part of Lonely Planet's list of 20 things to do in New Delhi. My only problem with it is how it is prepared.  The street vendor uses his own hands to pick the hollow doughs and break them in the middle to open up space for the filling!  As a Filipino, I'm totally accustomed to  eating with my hands.  Sharing food with  others using our own hands though is a different matter.  I don't think I'll ever get use to it even when the people involved are only my own family.  I am proud to say though that I finished my Golgappas!  Come to think of it, sharing of food using our hands is an ultimate expression of familiarity and togetherness, similar to the custom of sharing alcohol using only a single shot glass.  Just like when we were young, our mothers probably fed us with their bare hands in certain occasions as well.  Which brings me to say that when it comes to family relationships and togetherness, Indians are probably ten times more close-knit than Filipinos.

For these reasons, I believe that India's charm is in its culture and people.  Both the good and the bad  makes India truly incredible!  It may not be for everyone but definitely it's worth a visit at least once in your lifetime.  Given the chance, I definitely would love to go back in a jiffy!

Gourmet Singapore - The Sequel

This is the second part of my recent gourmet adventures in the city of Singapore!  You can catch the first part of Singapore Gourmet here.  I'm making this quick and short!  And uploading lots of pictures for you to enjoy.

MAKANSUTRA GLUTTONS BAY

First stop is Makansutra Gluttons Bay at the Esplanade!

When dining hawker style, look for the stalls with the longest queue!  These stalls are bound to serve great food.  In this area, that stall will have to be BOON TAT SEAFOOD!  I would recommend you try local favorites like the Fried Baby Squid, BBQ Stingray, and Garlic Prawns!  If you're craving for Crabs, they have them as well.  Depending on the multitude of people, orders can take 20-30 minutes to prepare.  While waiting for your order, try the Fried Hokkien Mee on the adjacent stall (SOON LEE).

Insider Tips:
  • Go early as stocks are limited.
  • Bring along your friends! One will have to save the table, another to queue for drinks (only the first stall is selling beverages), and another one to order food.
  • When in doubt, ask! The queue can get quite confusing.  There's one queue to place orders and another for people waiting for their orders.  Make sure you're on the right one. hehehe (In the BOON TAT stall anyway)

After dinner, you may take a stroll along the Esplanade and enjoy the view.

Walk to the nearby Youth Olympic Park and all the way to Marina Bay Sands through the Double Helix Bridge.

Or go to Esplanade Mall for coffee and desserts.  Don't forget to pass by THE COOKIE MUSEUM, for a taste of Singapore's Best Hand-made cookies.  There are samples you can try for free.  Or you can dine-in and enjoy it with a cup of coffee or tea.

If you're lucky, you may just be able to catch an outdoor concert at the Esplanade as well!

THE EQUINOX

For a great view of the Singapore Skyline, dine at the EQUINOX at Swissotel The STAMFORD Hotel.  As you can see in my picture, there are no pictures of food as our buffet spread wasn't good at all.  We were a large group so they had to put us in a function room which was located one floor below the actual restaurant.  I wonder if their usual spread is any better ... but I highly doubt it.  Even the desserts weren't executed well.  You'll have to soak in the view to come close to getting your money's worth.  Now how do you get yourself in the picture? Check out the upper right image in the collage.

GARRETT POPCORN

Unlike dining at the Equinox, you'll never have to worry about getting your money's worth with GARRETT's POPCORN!  Caramel-glazed popcorn are simply delicious!  Try the ones with Macadamia Nuts. (^o^)/

Located right outside Universal Studios Singapore (Resorts World, Sentosa Island).

TRAVEL TIP: If you're taking the taxi to Resorts World, ask "Uncle", your elder Chinese taxi driver, to take you directly to the underground entrance of Resorts World to avoid paying the additional $6 SGD fee.   (^o-)v

CHANGI AIRPORT FOOD COURT

And just when you thought you'd have enough already.  Go to the Changi Airport Food Court (I think it was on the 3rd floor -  one level above where the shops are located), and try more local delicacies like Chicken Rice!  To be honest, I try to avoid eating chicken rice because first of all, I hate eating white chicken (steamed).  And secondly, if the cook used a fatty chicken for the dish, the layer of fat that forms just below the skin can be very unappetizing!  In this stall however, I was happy to find out that they also serve ROASTED CHICKEN RICE! (^o^)/ (~$5 SGD).  Yummy!
