Faith and Money

Can one be rich and still be faithful?

The answer is yes, definitely.

Sadly though, for most Catholic Filipinos, faith and money are treated as opposites. Most still believe that having a lot of money is going against the will of God. Poor religious leaders earn better respect than well-to-do preachers. And wealthy servants of God are continuously criticized for not sharing enough of their wealth. Maybe it has something to do with the beatitude that says "Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of God." Or it could be due to that story about Jesus and the rich man who when asked to sell all his possessions and give them to the poor couldn't quite do so even if it was for entering the kingdom of God. Somehow people have been conditioned that the easiest way to enter the kingdom of God was to be poor. People therefore are choosing to be poor, whether it be consciously or subconsciously.

Bo Sanchez, a catholic preacher in the Philippines, was no different once in his life. He was poor and he was proud of it. And he believed that saving money was having a lack of trust in God among others. However, he believes this no longer.

Now he believes that "for many people, unless there's financial freedom, there can be no real freedom in their life." He knows that money can't buy happiness but it can buy freedom. And now, he strives to earn not so that he can be ugly rich, but more so to be able to help a lot more people.

In line with his new vision, he has written books about being truly rich. He is organizing seminars on personal finance, marketing, and entrepreneurship, helping Filipinos take a step further to financial freedom.

After all, there is nothing wrong with earning and saving your money. I believe it is the eventual attachment to money that destroys our spirit. But we are intelligent beings, if we will it enough, there is no attachment we cannot control or stop from developing.

In Bo's latest blog entry (http://bosanchez.ph/category/blogs/), he encourages everyone to be entrepreneurs. However, you take it, you are the CEO of your personal finances so better learn to manage your finances now!

My objective for next year would be to become an entrepreneur. I've tried trading a few times last year and was able to earn a decent amount out of it but I'm postponing that for now for family reasons. I am looking to establishing my own business. I don't mind if I fail at first as long as I learn from the process. If I don't have enough finances, I can always avail of fast cash payday loans. Not every loan is bad for you. If what you plan to do with the money produces a revenue greater than that of the loan's interest rate then who would have effectively started out something using someone else's money. In this new field that I'm entering, I hope someone who can help and guide me will come along.

The Fat Lady has Landed

I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling ... Got to make you understand.

We've been trying for a long time to say what we want to say but feelings don't come easy to express in a simple way.

There's a girl Ive been waiting to see and I really get the feeling that she likes me. 'Coz she said so, but not in so many words.

When I fall in love it will be forever.
Never gonna give you up.
Never gonna let you down.

When I fall in love it will be completely.
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you.

Hold me in your arms.

If there's anything you need, all you have to do is say.

And the moment I can feel that you feel that way too.

Together forever and never to part, together forever we two.

-o-

The Fat lady has landed but it ain't over 'til the Fat lady sings!
See you in Araneta ...

100 PUSH UP Update: Kulelat!

I'm taking the 100 Push Up Challenge.

I'm suppose to be entering my 5th week tomorrow but instead, I'm still on Day 1 of the 4th week. Finding time to do my push ups have been challenging. Most of the times, I postpone my exercise because I've just taken a bath for the day and I don't want to be sweaty and smelly before leaving the house. And then I forget to do the exercise later in the day! This caused me to be delayed by a week but I'm still on the challenge. After all, the goal is to simply (?) to be able to do 100 push ups at one go.

I just finished Day 3 of Week 3 shown above. I follow column 3, by the way. It's getting really tough every week! The chart says to rest for 120 seconds before the next repetition but I'm definitely taking more than that. It allows me to do so anyway. Usual session takes me about 30 minutes to complete one set. This has limited my exercise to push ups and badminton only (trying to fit a game of tennis in my schedule as well). I've not done any yoga, pilates, or yogilates recently. I miss pilates because it was producing results for my core muscles (abs area). Not only did my abs feel firmer but my badminton game actually improved on a massive scale because of it. Massive equates to being able to beat the best player in the group in a singles match. (^O^)/

Day 1 of Week 4 is next! Come to think of it, every session, I'm doing more than a 100 push ups already! That's more than all the push ups I've done before in my life. The results are beginning to show as well. Hopefully, I'm motivated enough to continue this to the end and be able to produce the hundred at one go. Wish me luck ...

What's Wrong?

What's wrong? I don't know.

I'm having a series of sleepless/restless nights. I'm wide awake 'til around 5am in the morning and when I try to sleep, my mind still keeps working and I just can't get any decent sleep. Even the tried and tested method of counting numbers doesn't work anymore. What's weird is around 9-10pm every night, I'm dead asleep in our living room while watching TV or resting after a game of badminton. However by 11pm at night I'm alive and kicking again! It doesn't matter how tired I am. The moment I try to sleep pass 11pm my mind revs up as if it was on Energizer batteries. So I toss and turn in bed, restless the whole night through.

This brought me to decide not to sleep early morning today. I'm hoping that this will fix my sleeping hours.

I have been reading a lot of articles in the internet recently. I can't believe the countless opportunities and endless libraries of information available. I realize I have been under using my internet connection! Hence, my mind working endlessly, trying to absorb all the information and figuring out possible applications. However, everything is just thought, as usual. Getting myself to act has always been the hardest part.

Dig this. In 2007,
  • 11,789 Americans
  • 6,114 Japanese
  • 1,267 Australians
were engaged, married, or "was in a relationship (partnership)" with a Filipino. This is the statistical profile as reported in the Commission on Filipinos Overseas website (www.cfo.gov.ph). You can also download a Handbook for Overseas Filipinos from the site. Something I never knew existed even after having worked abroad for 4 years.

Sometimes people pretend to be not in the know, when in fact they really know what's causing their problems and what needs to be done to solve these. Why is knowing not enough to bring someone to action?

Atom Rings No More

The touch screen LCD of my O2 atom got broken a month ago. This is the second time, by the way, in just a span of a year and a half! It's so expensive to replace the screen and so I opted not to have it fixed anymore. Instead, I'm planning on buying a new one. However, I haven't found a replacement yet. I was thinking of getting an Iphone 3G but with my experience with wide screen smart phones, it might be wiser of me not to do so else I want another broken screen! *sigh*

In the meantime, I busy myself with ring tones. I love R&B music and all of my phones have R&B ring tones. While surfing the net, I came across Rick Ross Ringtones. The site was quite easy to navigate and I just love the big download buttons marked in green making it easy to download the tunes. Feature download right now is Rick Ross The Boss Ringtone.

Still looking for that new single by Ne-Yo though. Got to get my hands on that one.

Mamma Mia! Here I go again!

I got dragged to watch this movie the last time I was in Manila. (^O^)v I've never heard of it until that moment. I wasn’t disappointed though as I love musicals! You see, I grew up watching The Sound of Music and The King and I.

This particular scene when the cast sang “Take a Chance on Me” reminded me of two college friends who made a pact to marry each other when both are still single when they reach the age of 28! Imagine that! Hehehe (^O^)/

If you’re all alone
When the pretty birds have flown
Honey I’m still free
Take a chance on me
Gonna do my very best
And it ain’t no lie
If you put me to the test,
If you let me try

Do you want to know what happened to my friends? Well, they’re both in their 30s now and together … they are not. But everything’s well … the girl got married before she turned 28 and is now living in the states. The guy is in Manila being pampered to the next level by an officemate. Hihihi (^O^)v

-0-

Note: If not for the music, you’ll definitely love the setting! The place where they shot the movie was breathtaking. The blue beaches, the sunsets, the church by the cliff, the moonlight by the sea! I believe the director highlighted these settings more than the characters themselves!

Blogging Extra!

Who would have thought that something as personal as your blog can now be used to generate extra money or income for you? When I started blogging back in 2006, the thought never crossed my mind. Back then, all I wanted was to start up my own website so people can go visit and read things about me.

The more I was into blogging though, I acquired a lot of new blogging friends and the more I got to know about the internet. It turns out that the possibilities are really endless when it comes to the internet. And one of these possibilities that I got introduced to was making money out of your blog. Yes, you can make money out of your blogs. Companies like payperpost offer this kind of services.

Personally, as a reader of other blogs as well, I hate reading sponsored posts. Somehow, the sponsorship makes the blog impersonal. But I’ve also read some where the sponsorships are cleverly hidden, barely noticeable at all. That is the challenge for me now because as much as I’d like to earn extra through this site, I don’t want to lose any readers because of it.

What will I do with all the extra money? Well, maybe I can use it to support my sister so she can retire and go back to our hometown already. Nah! I don’t think it’ll even be enough to support myself. Hehehe. (^O^)v But one thing that it may be good for is buying all those gadgets like PDAs, cellphones, and accessories for my DSLR. That’ll be good enough reward for me!

If ever, I’ll let you guys in on my first purchase … *fingers crossed*

Equality on the Tennis Courts

Men vs. Women

Equality among men and women have long been a standing issue. Over the years, I believe the situation has gone better with women in society getting better treatments. Of course, women are never satisfied. (Which sidetracks me to Roberto Cavalli's flirtatious question for Miss Mexico at the Miss Universe 2008 Pageant, "When is a woman truly satisfied?") (Peace to all women out there! (^o^)v) And it is no different on the tennis courts. Women players, spearheaded by the great Billie Jean King, have been clamoring for equal prize money between the men's and women's tournaments. And a couple years back , they exactly just got that.

While watching ACE, Star Sports' Tennis Magazine Show, last night, a feature on the finer details of equality made me smile. Here's the financial earnings report of reigning Wimbledon Champions Rafael Nadal and Venus Williams compared.
                    Rafael Nadal Venus Williams
Earnings (Pounds) 750,000 850,000 (Singles + Doubles)
Minutes on Court 1114 1029
Earnings/Minute ~673 ~826

I guess it's now the men's turn to feel aggrieved! hehehe ^^ Rafael Nadal spent more minutes on the court but earned less compared to Venus Williams! (Side note: It's not bad to be a tennis player no? Spoken with a Rafa-like accent)

I think issues on equality among men and women will never end. The world is, was, and never will be equal. However, even after having said that, I guess what's really important is learning how to treat everyone fairly.

Read more on what Jon Henderson has to say at The Observer.

My First Car

My sister got her first car when she finished her 1st degree in college. She was around 21 years old then. I got my first car at the age of 25 years old! And it wasn’t easy at all; my parents only gave in after endless prodding and guilt tripping from me.

When they finally agreed to buy me a car, I decided that anything will do. I wasn't really involved that much in the buying process. They chose the brand, type, and model. However, they did confirm with me if I like it or not. They also asked my choice of color. That was the extent of my car buying experience. I consciously didn't try and object to anything they decided so as not to change their good spending mood. I was happy to have any car anyway.

I wonder though how it would be to buy a car on your own. The dodge dealerships in san diego promises to take your buying experience to the next level. I would love to experience that. I'll definitely buy my own car the next time. I bet you'll feel the same high like when you shop for expensive gifts for yourself.

Just to make things clear, I'm not really particular about what age my sister and I got our first cars; I just used that to my advantage. And the real reason for the delay was because I went to Japan to work right after graduation and was out of the country the whole time. (^O-)v I'm really spoilt to the max, I know, but I'm not proud of it. I am, however, very thankful that I have parents who can provide me with such luxuries.

Wasted Resources

Do you know what a lien is?

www.dictionary.com defines a lien as “the legal claim of one person upon the property of another person to secure the payment of a debt or the satisfaction of an obligation.”

With the sudden increase in steel and cement prices these days, I bet a lot of people in the construction business are filing for liens. I believe before one can file for a claim one has to submit a preliminary lien notice. I have two friends who are into the construction business; I hope they don’t have to go through this. All these legal claims really only put good resources put to waste. (I bet the attorneys I know reading this blog would object to this! (^O^)/)

I would know really because back when I was in high school, my mom was swindled big time in her business. She had to file a claim to freeze the bank accounts and some of the properties of the offending party. And it’s taking years for the case to progress. (I wonder if what my mom did can be called a lien?)

I certainly hope nobody files a lien or any kind of claim against me!

Miss Slipping USA

Miss USA 2008 Crystle Stewart follows the footsteps of former Miss USA 2007 Rachel Smith and SLIPS in the evening gown competition of the Miss Universe 2008 Pageant. I wouldn't be surprised if Miss USA will now be stigmatized as Miss Slipping USA! A befitting representation of their slipping economy as well.

On another note, Ms. Japan makes it 3 straight years into the top 15! She must be doing something right to merit all the attention or is there another force at work here? hmmm ......

Botika ng Bayan

“Botika ng Bayan” literally translates to “The Pharmacy of the Country”, it is a program of the government of the Philippines to bring cheap medicines to the public. The stations are not necessarily government owned, private companies may apply for a franchise. Owners will get the privilege of buying medicines at a subsidized cost thus being able to distribute the same medicines to the public at reduced cost. This is one of the business opportunities that have been presented to me recently.

When it comes to medicines though, one has to be careful because the human body may react differently to different compounds. Especially with the resurgence of generic brands and new medicines, one has to be careful in choosing the right one. Knowing whether the medicine came from a reputable pharmaceutical manufacturing company helps. Case studies and rigor testing must be done before new compounds, included in medicines, must be introduced to the public.

Managing a pharmacy looks difficult, especially the fact where in you have to take inventories of very small objects. My mom is a pharmacist but she left the profession when she started going into trading and business. I personally don’t know anything about running a pharmacy but as my mom says, ‘every opportunity is a learning experience’. I may fail at it at first but if I learn enough to make it big the next time, that’s what will really count. Let’s all see where this will lead …

Chasing after Taufik Hidayat

Here I am at the lower right bottom of the picture chasing after the guy in pink stripes shirt, Taufik Hidayat.

Taufik Hidayat is arguably Indonesia's best badminton single's player ever. He has won all major titles there is to win in badminton including the Olympics. Lin Dan, reigning world champion and no. 1 player in the world, has not won the Olympic gold medal yet.

So I went to Singapore last June to watch the Aviva Singapore Badminton Open. Although Taufik was registered to play, for some reason unknown to me, he backed out when the tournament started. However, he was gracious enough to make an appearance during the breaks so as not to disappoint the fans. Everyone of course scrambled to have a picture taken with him. I was late to the punch as when I saw him, the photo op has ended and the organizer of the event was already calling him for another matter.

I patiently waited though and asked a companion to be ready to take my picture using my Canon 350D. And when he was finished talking with the organizers, I sneaked in and asked if I can have my picture taken with him. Like a true champion respecting a fan's wish, he readily agreed and stood beside me. Cameras clicked and flashes began igniting around us as a throng of fans and photographers who were still following him around realized he was posing for another photo op. I gave it my best smile and stood proudly beside him. I looked around the flashing lights trying to locate where my companion was positioned still smiling all through out. I scanned the people around us from left to right. He was positioned a bit angled to my right and so I turned a bit and gave it my best smile again. To my surprise, no lights or flashes were igniting from my camera! My companion was fumbling with the controls! As I hurriedly went my companion's way to take a quick look at what was wrong, Taufik, probably thinking I already got my shot, was quick to leave the building! aahhh...!

So to make a long story short, I never got my picture with him! Well, at least not on my camera. I probably have one, a clear shot, probably better than the picture above because there were no other people in the background, in somebody else's cam! If you are out there reading this, please send it to me! hehehe (^O^)v

03:22 The players are back on court to warm up! TV is showing the game between Borg and McEnroe, the one where Borg lost and then retired afterwards. I read somewhere that he didn't mind losing at all, the motivation wasn't there anymore. Federer is still very much motivated, I believe.

01:54 Nadal wrongly challenges a call. Federer serves aggressively backing it up with offensive forehands to even the set.

01:49 Roger tries to go behind Nadal and comes in to the net. Rafa balanced or unbalanced like always produces the backhand crosscourt passing shot to hold serve.

01:47 The tension is rising and I couldn't stop muching my Chippy snack! Roger brings his ace total to 16 and holds serve to bring the set even at 2-2.

01:41 Roger starting to use his slice backhand again. Use the drop-come-to-net play again. But Nadal holds strong as a Federer slice goes wide.

01:39 Good serving and powerful forehands wins the game for Roger. He's running around his backhand more often now.

01:36 Nice serving from Nadal wins him the first game of the 4th set. He is serving at 72% first serves in play.

01:34: Must win 4th set for the champ, Roger Federer!

Set 3:

01:32
After losing 2 set points from the Nadal serve, can Roger seal the deal with his own serve? I didn't have to ask as before I could write this, another ace flies off from his racket! Roger wins the 3rd set!

01:17 Nadal holds serve.

01:11 We're are back live after a 1 hour delay!

23:52 Play suspended due to Rain Delay ... grrrr
Is this delay just prolonging the envitable, that is, Nadal winning the championships? Or will this help the champ? Everyone will have to wait and see as the RAIN is making itself felt again in
Center Court. It never fails to make an entrance in Wimbledon every year. Go Roger! I believe! (^O^)v

23:50 Federer breaths! For the first time in the match, Federer is not broken at 4 all in the set. He holds his serve but still looks puzzled as to what to do against Nadal.

23:25 Forehand driving volley gives Roger 2 break points!

23:24 Nadal wins the first point with a ball called long from Roger's backhand. Hawk eye confirms though that the ball was IN but Roger didn't challenge the call!

23:19 Nadal slips! Calls the trainer out at the break. But erases any doubts (from doubters like me) with a backhand winner! Roger returns the favor with an ace serve. He hold serve to lead 2-1 in the 3rd set.

23:18 Nadal holds with a forehand wide return from Federer. Does he have enough motivation to and desire to take this match to a fifth set? ^^

23:14 Roger holds comfortably to win the 1st game of the 3rd set. Why can't he play like this later in the sets .... !

Lechon Juice anyone?

Have you ever tried Lechon (Roasted Suckling pig) Juice? Sounds weird right? That's exactly how I felt when I drank it. (^O^)v It has become customary for me to try unique concoctions every time I eat out. This time I was at a Thai restaurant in Singapore ordering lunch when I found something unique that I haven't found in the Philippines. The main ingredient can be found in the Philippines but I wondered why no one has ever made a juice out of it yet. So I took a sip and instantly I my mind craved for Lechon! Now, I knew why it's not being served in my country. It tasted weird. As if eating meat in liquid form. hehehe (^O^)/ It was Tanglad (Lemongrass) juice! It's an herb commonly used in the Philippines to make roasted food fragrant and yummy.

Although I felt weird drinking it, maybe it can be used to induce once appetite specially when on a budget. hihihi (^O^)v

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will battle it out again in Center Court for the third straight year! Roger has dominated the tournament for 5 years now, another win this year would definitely immortalize him in the tennis world.

One advice I can give him though is to avoid wearing a headband on a very sunny day. His two-toned face is very visible now. Rafael "Rafa" Nadal has the same mark as well.

Well ... it doesn't really matter it you can play tennis like these two can. (^O^)/

Wimbledon: Serena or Venus

Classes have started a couple of weeks back but it was my first time to attend my Business Statistics class this afternoon. We were discussing probability this afternoon and the teacher got my attention when he asked "What's the probability of a Williams winning Wimbledon?", to my delight I answered with a loud "1oo%!" He nods in agreement but upon discussing further, we joked around and said that it may not really be a hundred because anything can still happen before the game starts, like maybe they'll fail a drug test or eat something bad. Don't get me wrong, I don't want anything bad to happen to Williamses. And I'm as excited as you to see them battle it out again in center court. I just wonder what the tournament rules are if both players can't make it to the finals. Will those who lost in the semifinals take their spot?

One fact that holds true is, whoever wins tonight, the Williamses win. The sisters are also playing in the Ladies' doubles final later in the night against Lisa Raymond (USA) and Samantha Stosur (AUS).
30 minutes and counting 'til game time ... ! Game starts 9pm (Philippines time).

Update: Venus wins in straight sets, 7-5 6-4. High quality thrilling tennis all through out the match. I think the sisters really bring out the best in each other. A little bit of sibling rivalry going on, I think (^^;)

-0-

Update2: Serena and Venus team up to win the Ladies' doubles (6-2 6-2) as well. Big sister Venus delivering on her promise to work even harder for the doubles because Serena deserves a trophy as well. (^O^)v

Hello!

No, I'm not trying to introduce my site or myself to you again but, definitely, I am saying

"Hello!"

'Coz you know what,

they say it all starts with One Hello.

Love, that is, it begins with one Hello.

(Play soundtrack!) nyahahaha (^O^)v

Come to think of it, a lot of things start with a simple hello. Friendships, business dealings/partnerships, and maybe even LOVE for that matter. So open yourself, smile, and greet everyone you meet with a warm hello. (^O^)/~~ (... and the hardest part will be over ...)

If you haven't seen the movie "When Love Begins" go see it! I've heard mix reviews about it, from different generations. I found it to be a refreshing love story, without the usual howling and melodramatic flares. And the lines were actually quite witty, delivered in Taglish (Tagalog-English), which we're very reminiscent of Sharon Cuneta's early movies.
